ParticipantThat you made it work fine on first boot is actually kind of surprising.
Most if not all of the settings I make outside of MCX records require reboots to take effect.

ParticipantI had noticed that firefox builds those extra files on first run….
that being said I have had some major issues with 3.0.3 even on non-instadmg boxes.
I am not using 3.0.3 for the time being.knowmad
Participantthanks to this thread, I just figured out a way to make my first run script a little bit better.
when i have it done i will post it (with as many mentions of who created what parts as i can remember).
what I got from here is a way (reliable so far) of naming the machine and putting the mac address into the report it will generate for record keeping.
THANK YOU!

ParticipantI actually set all my MCX records using the guest computer setup just like this.
the errors (to be honest) don’t bother me as I know what they are, why they are there, and that they are harmless.
There is a way to make the errors go away, involving a startup script, but then you run into the “must reboot once to make it stick” issue.
I am ok with my status quo, though eventually I want to set all my MCX settings via command line, that is still a ways off.
BTW, the http://managingosx.wordpress.com/ website is VERY useful for learning some tricks on controlling things via locally set MCX records.
I used info from there to set my login screen, force password on waking from sleep/screen saver and a few others that were not so obvious.knowmad
Participantnot that this has any effect on your current (self resolved, good work) issue…. but you may want to double check the order of your updates.
Mine run a little different, and I created my (non-canonical) list by building a base image,, burning it to a machine and running updates via apple software update, copying down the order, until there were none left.
The differences may mean nothing, or it may mean that some small item in the background gets changed in the wrong way…..
my order is
10.5.5
airport utility leopard update
remote desktop client
front row 2.1.6
QT755
itunes
java update 2
ilifehelper
CUSTOM PACKAGES (that you might care about)
java se6
etc……I wonder if I am missing something in my order, if you ar emissing something in yours, or if it does not matter at all

Participanton patrick’s point of the hardware check:
I have made a few builds off of hardware specific install discs, so far I have had no issues. Something about the way InstaDMG works simply does not trip that check.
at least not for me, at least not so far….. I will be doing a new one for the new powerbooks this afternoon, keep ya posted if you care.knowmad
Participant1) not yet (seen this issue)
2) can I have a copy of your installer choices file? Mine is being….. recalcitrant…..when I get mine working I will test and give my input, in the mean time… deleting the search index could be easily scripted…. technically so could the rest of it…
apple script is pretty easy for this.

Participantits working as an install only script? ie it runs during build not boot? way cool, this I have to test.

Participantwhen you reboot a second time (you image a machine, boot it up and wait through long blue screen, then login, then reboot) do you still get the blue screen?
gut feeling….. the OS is building all the machine specific files that ibstadmg does NOT put in, and that the blue screen is a first boot issue. I have seen similar items after running applejack, the first boot afterwords is often slow.

ps as far as I know there is no reliable way to set ard on image rather than boot….. too much is dependent on mac address and the like.knowmad
Participantwanna put something together and suggest it to the admins as the germ of a useful faq?

ParticipantThere is most definitely an MCX record setting for this, I saw it when last I was playing around in work group manager……
its under the finder section.
You can set it as apply Once and then let the user change it if they so choose, or apply always and let them fume (not suggested) when they can’t change the view….
Your choice really.
May I suggest becoming close friends with WorkGroup Manger and then using iceberg (or your favorite software) to package the resulting MCX records?
Or you could always use DSCL to write out the MCX records long hand style…..
Anyway, I hope that helps… I have a screen shot but can’t post it here.

ParticipantI have my admin account in /var/admin though when I install it I tell it the full path of /private/var/admin just to be safe.
never had an issue…. except that I screwed up the permissions on that folder several time before I got them right.
when I get a chance I will put up the exact command I am using.knowmad
Participantgneagle,
I just target the instadmg drive ($3) and it has worked beautifully. Some things need to be put into startup scripts, but thats not a big deal as those things are few and far between (and noted) for the most part.
So I ask again, how do you handle these settings? whats on your defaults list?
