I had a completely unrelated issue on a windows machine yesterday that I will retell here because it might help…. bear with me.
A user had her machine looked at by one of our developers because she could not get online in the office using wireless.
Wired worked fine.
The developer could not fix it.
The next day the issue disapeered in the office, but surfaced at home.
Full connection, strong signal, working IP address, could ping the router/gateway/other machines….. only cached web pages.

worked on it over the phone and on a whim, did a team viewer session with her and it worked…. I got into the machine, but it still could not serf the web wirelessly…. wired worked fine.

I did an nslookup and discovered that her DNS had been hardcoded to that of our office.
It appears the developer when trying to help her hard coded the office dns into her wireless and when he put the machine back onto DHCP, he forgot to clear that.

I cleared it, she worked.

SO:
1) I assume these are desktops, but do they have more than one connection?
2) have you checked DNS on all connections?
3) IP conflicts?
4) log files?
5) little snitch?

recently we also had a bad IP address… which is to say a perfectly normal usable address being handed out by DHCP that stopped any machine that got it from working properly (had to do with another developer but we wont go there). Any chance all the bad instances have the same IP?

My turn to complain.
I cannot get the thing to work. I tried a brand new download of everything (latest build), I made a new userdata file, I tried the old one, I tried with password hash file, with plaintext password, hidden, admin, visible, non-admin, specific uid, auto uid, etc…
Nothing,
here, in case it helps, is the error from the logs when I tried it on my machine without running instadmg to see what I would get:

well, and this is only a small item, it should work if your building 10.6 on 10.6
I … in a fit of stupidity, am trying 10.6 build with the build machine running 10.5
so… I changed only one of the two items to 10.6
the other I left as 10.5
course I COULD just do away with the check completely and tell it that its running leopard and let it go from there….. that would work too…. and its cleaner.

Jazz,
Yes, post install first run scripts are useful… unless your adding those files to EVERY user you create. In which case you might consider putting them into the default user setup (aka user template) so that you dont have to run later scripts or leave password coded into scripts on the system.
Quote by: thegooch49[p]Yeah, thanks for the replies. My previous images were built with a 10.5.0 disk, upgraded to 10.5.7. This last one, I used an OEM 10.6, upgraded to 10.5.7. That seems to be the difference in what I did in creating these images. Odd.

[/p]
I am assuming you mistyped something… “upgraded 10.6 to 10.5.7” either that, or you have clearly stated why your build has issues….
my assumption is the first.
Oddly, I have been using an oem disk for a while now and gotten no issues with printers, whatsoever.

I know that snow leopard server has a very nice system for building images… and …. its graphical…. and very very similar to what we do…..
course, that requires access to server…..

My initial goal was to run the system setup, and just skip the account creation, but skipping system setup entirely gets the job done. If there is a way to just skip the account creation, I’d love to know it, but I’m not losing sleep over the problem.[/p]
None that I know of, but I never looked into it, i just went with the ‘do away with system setup completely’
Sorry
