For all intents and purposes, there is little difference between Lion-and-up Client and Server OS’es(10.7, 10.8.) Therefore we removed the prevailing suggestion that people try to not build images on ‘servers’.

The distribution change in Lion where now the MAS is used does make it extremely difficult to get a Lion Server OS installer, the only way I know of is the hardware-specific route, as described here: http://derflounder.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/downloading-lion-os-installers-for-your-specific-mac-model/

As of 10.8 MoLoYoLo, there is no support for the AutoServerSetup.plist, which is just about as final a word on the topic as anyone can offer. It is highly unlikely Apple will consider images and automation a supportable or intended way to move forward with OS X Server as a platform: it’s now an app, self-contained like Xcode. Pardon if I find it not particularly attractive to continue to advertise or document that niche functionality on one OS version of a heavily altered server platform. I will try to remember to squeeze it in with the next catalog revisions, thank you for approaching us so politely.

There is a bug filed so you can track its progress, https://code.google.com/p/instadmg/issues/detail?id=115

I’m the one who hard-coded it, sorry about that. I’ll work on logic to detect whatever’s NOT the recovery partition on 10.8/10.7 images, and may consider turning off recovery partition creation with a flag by default, since it’s causing more difficulties this way, especially when people create cache files with custom names.

Hey typofonic, I haven’t had any issues with the previous 12C54 build, and created the cache while building a 12C60(it integrates the supplemental update) from scratch before running to the airport without a problem. I haven’t gotten it to fail since the tweaks made in r459.

I saw the same symptom you’re having previous to that commit, where the recovery is mounting incorrectly, and intermittently got around it before that  by changing the tmp path with

--instadmg-scratch-folder=

since I often use an external SSD connected over thunderbolt to house my instadmg test directories. Please keep trying, I unfortunately can’t give too much help until the end of next week, but it would be awesome if you could find time to join IRC ##osx-server and ping those folks in the meantime. Thanks, Allister

The first failure was a recent symptom, the recovery partition in the cache was being mounted incorrectly, but 459 and later should’ve addressed that. The second failure is usually due to a fluke that is solved by a reboot, so i’m not sure where to start. Please let me know if you’re still having  issues, and if you can’t make an image from the vanilla catalog please let me know you’re InstallESD.dmg’s build number.

InstaDMG-20121005-r459.zip

I was able to test everything successfully on 10.6 and 8 with caches, and bumped the catalogs with the recent Apple Remote Desktop/supplemental updates, testing and reports would be greatly appreciated.

kai,

You’re absolutely correct, and I’ve integrated the changes you suggested after coming to the same conclusion. Look for an updated SVN soon. Thanks, Allister

Please make sure your ‘general’ catalog has the installer builds line at the top, just copy it out of 10.8_vanilla.catalog, I experienced this myself. Please copy and paste or use pastie.com  or gist.github.com to share log files and what you’re seeing in the terminal. Thanks, Allister

It is recommended to run instadmg on the same OS you’re trying to build, sorry that time has passed and multiple people are having multiple issues. Please look for me in IRC at ##osx-server on freenode (<-that’s a link to log in without a IRC client installed) or message me @sacrilicious on twitter so I can help you through this. Thanks.

…if SEP is set to interrupt mounting of volumes/making them available, it is possible it could be timing out. Best to leave anything that thrashes I/O or in other ways slow down the disk off (e.g. an earlier incarnation of the code postponed spotlight scanning IIRC, etc.)
And just to double-check, you left the InstallESD.dmg exactly as you found it inside the ‘Install Mac OS X.app’ bundle?

Hey jafuller,

No need to modify the InstallESD.dmg, and I’d put it in BaseOS. Another thing to check for is that you definitely don’t mount that volume or have another install disk mounted while trying to run the process. Let me know if that does the trick.

Hey db,

Please rename MacOS X Client 10.6 10A432.dmg to “Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg”, it’s in the right place(as mentioned in the error message). You may also want to make sure the image isn’t mounted, a reboot helps it flush any lingering mounts just in case the diskarbitrationframework is being flaky.
And are you sure you can’t find a 10.6.3 installer? It could potentially save you some time, since there would conceivably be less changes to the code.

This may not be an answer to your question, but I haven’t had a problem setting timezone with my firstboot script, found here:
https://github.com/unixorn/lug*age-examples/blob/master/firstboot/firstBootPost-Imaging.sh
(to get around the spam filter I replaced one of the ‘g’s in the URL above)

Hi Al,

We can discuss this in the developers forum Apple provides. Thanks,
