ParticipantHi Nate
I am indeed. Somewhere in the scheme of things I missed this whole step when I started this whole instaDMG thing so i’m coming at this having done most everything else. DERP! Anyhow do I just put the xml file in the folder and run the workflow as normal or do I have to run the xml from the terminal and then run the workflow?
Cheers

Participantpoint taken. back at work now and am looking to use WGM to take care of the preferences. I’ll use instadmg to make and bake, deploy to, well deploy and WGM to customise the user experience then freeze it with deepfreeze.

ParticipantHad a light bulb moment this morning. When you say “move” to the user template folder do you mean drag and drop or use the command in the terminal? Also are you putting it in the user template folder of the master OS image file that instaDMG creates in the base image folder? I’ve been trying to install these post with a pkg and it removes everything else from the folder as os x doesn’t merge the two but overwrites.

ParticipantThanks for the outline. I’ve been using the diffs file. Any reason not to use the diffs file? I’ll give it a run through today and report back.

ParticipantThanks bunch. Am trawling through it all at present and will try the plist method first i think.

ParticipantI think i’ll create a new catalogue which just deals with the stuff to be placed in the “User Template”. I can then control the user experience and rego for all accounts at a base level. I can then use this for all the images I make for different faculties/uses.
I have a catalogue just for what I call “base sys utils” (flip 4 mac, perian, flash player, VLC etc, stuffit expander) which works well for all images.

ParticipantGood tip about moving the user stuff from CS5 to the user template. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that! I’ll need to do it as a package of course and get it in the build train in the right order.
What happens with Acrobat/Distiller? Do they still work or is the serialisation broken?

ParticipantTested out the acrobat/CS5 again. Works like a charm using the outlined method.

Participantor just get it from “System Profiler”, a little easier but yes, that looks like a plan. I’m not really a coder so I follow as opposed to lead on the scripting front. Let me know how it goes? I guess you could do a find and replace for the ID in PackageMaker before packaging up the prefs but i’m not sure of the implications (if any).

ParticipantI am fiddling with this also and finding problems with ByHost. As ByHost is machine specific i’m guessing we have to make the required changes using another mechanism.
I’m onto chapter 7 of the book recommended to me here in the forum but it hasn’t got to work arounds for ByHost prefs and issues yet. So much to learn, so little time!
The book is: Enterprise Managed Mac Prefs: Mac Managed Prefs, MCX and sheds much light on this whole subject. Get it.

Participantthere are a whole load of things that I deleted in composer that helped it to work. they mainly are the files that customise the install which kinda defeats the purpose but it’s not too much trouble.
roughly i did the following.
on a clean computer with only 10.6.5 OS installed…
install acrobat and distiller, serialise and update, run/test
using Composer create the source using the installed difs file for acrobat
make pgk, checksum and add to instaDMG cuildtrain
install CS5, serialise and update, run/test
using Composer create the source using the installed difs file for CS5
remove anything in the “Users” folder in the source (yes it will still work fine, just no custom config bits in the final)
make pgk, checksum and add to instaDMG cuildtrainThis is the quick and dirty version. I need to do it again to change a few things and will document it in more detail but essentially this is it.
I do have a different serial number for Acrobat/Distiller and CS5 and they are both site licensed so I can only claim this works under these conditions.

Participant
Quote by: dead2sin[p]
Quote by: bw38[p]So you’re saying I should install the software, run updates, then create the package from the Pre-Installed package? That sounds like it saves a lot of work from the guide that’s currently up! Awesome. I take it I still have to make the changes to Adobe Acrobat and Distiller so they don’t break and try to self-heal afterwards.
On another note, how do I go about getting the upgrade? I didn’t know I could do that. Would certainly be nice to take advantage of![/p]
Just email their support and let them know that you own 7.21 and would like to get the latest update.
The guide is useful for non-composer users, but dang has composer got it nailed 🙂 Its only useful if you don’t need Acrobat.

I have it working with Acrobat and Distiller as well. It’s all about the order you make it in. am busy right now but i’ll post the way I got it to work later today but just to be clear I have CS5 + Acrobat and Distiller working in an instaDMG build train using the preset diffs in Composer.

Participantsorry, i posted this last post in the wrong topic.

Participantfound this…
“Aha – ndpete mentioned not running it on the server version of OS X. That seemed to be the problem. I ported the InstaDMG folder over to a client mac and built the image there and sure enough, iLife Support was baked in. Glad that’s taken care of…
This is why we cannot stress enough that you should not build images on the server OS. It does funky things.”
