Quote by: MacTroll[p]Using dscl what’s the users e-mail attribute look like? Should be a chunk of XML that describes what server they’re supposed to be enabled for.

It’s common that if the IP address specified is not what the server things it’s using, you’ll have issues.[/p]
I am not very familiar with dscl. Since these are network accounts, I went to the server (10.5 and users 10.5) and entered
dscl -u diradmin -p leopard.clnorfolk.org (leopard is where network accounts are hosted, tiger is mail server)
but don’t know where to go from there.

In workgroup manager, I used the inspector tab to get the following info

kAPOPRequired
APOPNotRequired
kAltMailStoreLoc

kAttributeVersion
Apple Mail 1.0
kAutoForwardValue

kIMAPLoginState
IMAPAllowed
kMailAccountLocation
tiger.clnorfolk.org
kMailAccountState
Enabled
kPOP3LoginState
POP3Deny
kUserDiskQuota
240

the dsAttrTypeNative:apple- shows the following

kAPOPRequired
APOPNotRequired
kAltMailStoreLoc

kAttributeVersion
Apple Mail 1.0
kAutoForwardValue

kIMAPLoginState

Well, I couldn’t figure anything out, so used migration assistant to move my account to a 10.5.5 machine. I wiped the MacBook Pro and installed 10.5.5 and used migration assistant to move it back again. After opening the mail, any message that I replied to or forwarded to someone, is now blank in the message section. It still shows the sender, subject, and date, but no message.

I checked with Kingston, and they no longer make the 2GB DIMMs due to lack of orders. The part # was KTA-G5400E/4G. It looks like the max on this machine will have to be 8GB despite it’s abilities.

Under unknown circumstances Finder gets into a mode that loses files. If a user tries to copy or duplicate a file, the file is erased. It is not moved to the trash, it is just gone. .
We too have had the problem where duplicated files are deleted. I can log in on the server as root, and they are just gone.
Apple has a fix. 10.4.7 from the Apple doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303771
•Networking and Xsan

Addresses an issue that could cause files to be deleted when duplicating them in the Finder on a mounted AFP volume.

I’m gonna agree here as well. If you had to pick a place to go tight on the budget it shouldn’t be your network infrastructure.
I’ve seen plenty of good installs gone bad because of cheap infrastructure. To further that point you should really look at the GigE options out there now as well. If you are going to be doing things like network homes and netbooting then it can make a big difference.
I can agree with you. We have been doing network homes, but not netbooting. Right now the only machines that have GigE cards in them are our two xServes. All the rest are just 100. Granted future purchases will have Gig in them.
Do you have a GigE suggestion? Something that isn’t necessarily the “ideal – if I had all the money I needed” box, but something that would be able to deal with what we have now and get a start at preparing for the future?

I am having much the same problem. We moved from one domain to another. I am not receiving mail due to an error 554:
Feb 28 09:41:57 tiger postfix/smtpd[24420]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from mail.otherguy.com[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]: 554 : Relay access denied; from= to= proto=ESMTP helo=
I did some work on it and now get the error 451:
Feb 28 14:07:38 tiger postfix/smtpd[27801]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from mail.otherguy.com[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]: 451 Server configuration error; from= to= proto=SMTP helo=
Thoughts?

Joel,
Thanks for the quick reply it worked great. However, the actual file to be deleted was named slightly different from yours. I deleted
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist . I didn’t have to copy the files at all either. On a somewhat different note, what do you recommed for folder permissions/ownership on student home folders?
Thanks again. This site has saved me countless times. Big Grin
Well, you would need to find out if they are in use first.

The easiest thing to do is reboot and then see what is left.
I rebooted the server and they are still there. Modification dates range from May 05 to Dec 06. There is one file named krb5kdc_rcache dated today. I assume that has to do with Kerberos and should not be deleted. File name with sample of what is inside follow:

Well, I have bad news and good news. The bad news is I had to nuke my server and reinstall 10.3.8. The good news is since then, there has been no problem with mail.
I copied my pref files from server admin, CCC the drive to my external firewire, wiped the drive and then reinstalled 10.3, then installed the 10.3.8 combo update. I am not taking it to 10.3.9.
I already have 10.4, but in talking with my apple rep, he advised doing the 10.3.8 reinstall instead of 10.4 until some of the bumps had been smoothed out.
Best of luck on your machine.
