ParticipantI would only care if this worked on 10.6 π I don’t really need the functionality in 10.5.

Participant
Quote by: Allister[p]Hey dead2sin,
More ‘voices in the choir’ and differing takes on the topic are always welcome, but just FYI there’s a U of Utah MacManagers podcast that larkost was Skyped in for where he replays a video(with timer) of the whole quickstart process. deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/utah.edu.1380568002
(that’s not a direct link, just to the whole podcast in iTunes)
Thanks for the props, and if you feel like pitching in with a demo I’M interested in seeing it!Allister[/p]
Perfect, I was unaware that that there were any videos out there on the topic. That is a great iTunes U class. Thanks for the link! I’m going to have to dig through these…
Nate
*edit*
Check out the episode from 2010.04.21 – It is exactly what you are looking for imo (to the OP)

ParticipantAllister has a great guide, but I know some people are very visual and I have been considering a video of how to get a basic image going (screen capture + Narration). Does anyone else think this would be beneficial?

ParticipantWe are well aware of how the AAMEE functions and have already read the documentation on the topic. We are trying to get it to work with InstaDMG specifically, not just install it on a machine as you normally would. Because the .pkg that the AAMEE spits out is not REALLY an apple package, it makes it extremely difficult to work with using InstaDMG as well as several other products that are out there.
Thanks for the input though.

ParticipantI know which files it changes, but I’m not quite sure what the postflight script does besides change the extension that I mentioned above. For now, I’m just having munki update flash upon first boot and when Adobe decides to stop being difficult with their installers, I’ll look at baking it in to InstaDMG again.

ParticipantSure, here you go. I’ve put the contents of my OfficeSettings.pkg into a .dmg file so you can see what I am putting in place and what type of stuff the files contain.

ParticipantBut wait, there is more!
The postflight script is a compiled binary. So its a black box, can’t tell what it does. On top of that, the payload delivers “Flash Player.plugin.lzma” to /Library/Internet Plug-ins/, so if I had to guess, the postflight removes that extra .lzma from the end so that it can work properly. Adobe is getting really frustrating with their installers. Why in the world would they do this?

Participant
Quote by: ttpedersen[p]I haven’t had time to test AAMEE but regarding the problems discussed above, could they be related to the statement at http://blogs.adobe.com/OOBE/2010/06/adobe_application_manager_ente.html: “When deploying through ARD a user is currently required to be logged in on the target system.” This is why AAMEE is still listed as a “preview” I guess.
I would think that this requirement will break the InstaDMG workflow, wouldn’t you think so?[/p]
This was my thought too, but it seems that the error message being thrown on the InstaDMG workflow is different from the one thrown when you install it over ARD without anyone logged in. Also, when InstaDMG is running, someone is technically logged in, but I’m not sure how the AAMEE installer determines that.
I’m super busy getting a new image ready with CS5 on it (Repacking it with Composer for now…). As soon as I get done setting up a new server and getting this image buttoned up, I’ll help you guys poke around the CS5 installer some more π
I like vogtstev’s idea about manually specifying the target file. If we can manually specify a target and set a hard link to that in the preflight, maybe we’ll progress to the next set of errors that the installer throws π
dead2sin
ParticipantIn the AAMEE itself, you can specify a custom install location, I wonder if we could somehow use that to tweak it a tiny bit to get it to play nicely with InstaDMG. By default, according to the documentation, it looks to install it on the boot volume, whatever that may be, unless you specify another location.

Participant
Quote by: vogtstev[p]Shucks. Failed again.
This time it was off the dmg and adobe scripts unaltered (remained $3 in preflight)
However, I got slightly different error messages in the log:./preinstall: Error : Unable to complete Silent workflow
./preinstall: Exit Code: 7
./preinstall: AAMEE Installer : Exit code of AdobeDeploymentManager is (127)
./preinstall: AAMEE Installer : Exit …

ParticipantSorry, I forgot to post that.
The build machine is running 10.6.3 and InstaDMG 1.6b2 with instaup2date and I am building 10.6.3 images as well.
I’ll try dumping it in a .dmg and see what happens π Thanks for the help. (Greg is the man btw!)

ParticipantSame error for me with –installDirPath=”${3}/${2}” in the preflight. π
dead2sin
ParticipantRunning this now.

ParticipantI changed the $2 to $3 to see if it likes that better, I’ll report back here the results as well π If that doesn’t work, I might try a few other things.
I am not familiar with the specifics of how InstaDMG installs to the disk image, so I was wondering what the full path would be to the disk image it is working on.
Thanks,
Nate

ParticipantI had the same problem. If we can get it working, I’d be thrilled, but I’m not holding my breath π
