ParticipantI have successfully used InstaDMG to create a base, untouched image and then patched using the Combo update. Inorder to do this I put the combo updater into the BaseUpdates folder, inside of a folder numbered “01”. So far with the newest version of InstaDMG I have been unable to apply the update using the same workflow. I have have created a 10.6 image with the proper InstallerChoices.xml items I want, but can’t get the update.
So here is what I have:
10.6 Base image “Mac OS X Install DVD.dmg” placed in the “BaseOS” directory
InstallerChoices.xml placed in the “BaseOS” Directory
“MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.3.pkg” in a directory labeled “01” inside the “BaseUpdates” Directory
–This workflow will produce an image with the choice I want applied but NOT the OS Update.I want a 10.6.3 untouched image with my Installerchoices applied.
Some one has pointed me to InstaUp2Date but I am have a VERY hard time figuring that out. So any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Participantwhat version of OSX are you running on the computer that you are attempting to build with?

Participant10.6.3.
I think I have found a workaround using InstaUp2Date. It is fairly straight forward once you get the hang of it. I will post back with my findings.

ParticipantAllister has a great guide, but I know some people are very visual and I have been considering a video of how to get a basic image going (screen capture + Narration). Does anyone else think this would be beneficial?

ParticipantHey dead2sin,
More ‘voices in the choir’ and differing takes on the topic are always welcome, but just FYI there’s a U of Utah MacManagers podcast that larkost was Skyped in for where he replays a video(with timer) of the whole quickstart process. deimos.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Browse/utah.edu.1380568002
(that’s not a direct link, just to the whole podcast in iTunes)
Thanks for the props, and if you feel like pitching in with a demo I’M interested in seeing it!Allister

Perfect, I was unaware that that there were any videos out there on the topic. That is a great iTunes U class. Thanks for the link! I’m going to have to dig through these…

Check out the episode from 2010.04.21 – It is exactly what you are looking for imo (to the OP)

ParticipantI have the original video that I used there (it was actually first in my Macworld presentation, but that was not recorded), and I am planning on making another one for my talk at MacSysAdmin in Sweden (higher quality). If I get accepted for the MacTech conference I will probably use it there as well.
I tried putting it up online once, but the video got re-compressed by the service I was trying to use, and was not really useable that way. I have been thinking about re-doing my home server, and if I do that then I can probably host it locally without those problems. But since that is probably going to wait until sometime after the new Mac minis start appearing as refurbs, I should probably just lay down a narration track, and see if we can host it on AFP548.
Just one more thing for the list…
