Apparently, Adobe saw fit to change out they made the Flash Player installer. It is now a .app. No problem I thought, because you can dig in the .app and find the Adobe Flash Player.pkg installer file.

I put the Adobe Flash Player.pkg into InstaDMG and ran it. Guess what? It doesn’t work! Adobe did something differently with this .pkg, even thought it has ALWAYS worked in the past for me. Craptacular. Here is the debug log:

    Any ideas?

    But wait, there is more!

The postflight script is a compiled binary. So its a black box, can’t tell what it does. On top of that, the payload delivers “Flash Player.plugin.lzma” to /Library/Internet Plug-ins/, so if I had to guess, the postflight removes that extra .lzma from the end so that it can work properly. Adobe is getting really frustrating with their installers. Why in the world would they do this?

    Hi all,
I was just doing the same install with the latest and greatest package from Adobe, and I get an error as well. I can only assume at this point that it is the same as yours. On the screen it just hangs, so I guess I will be cancelling the install at this point, it has been working on that folder for 2+ hours now.

    Thanks,
    Steven Stuart

I built my PKG using Composer and looking for file system changes. I’ll post the list of files you need to make a custom package tomorrow when I get into the office.

I know which files it changes, but I’m not quite sure what the postflight script does besides change the extension that I mentioned above. For now, I’m just having munki update flash upon first boot and when Adobe decides to stop being difficult with their installers, I’ll look at baking it in to InstaDMG again.

Heh – wish I would’ve seen this thread before now. I was trying to figure out why I kept downloading Flash Player 10.3, yet the resulting image was still 10.2… and what this weird “lzma” file is in the Internet Plug-Ins folder. 🙂

Still the case that the only solutions are repackaging or post-deployment install?

when adobe employees themselves recommend repackaging…

I had the same problem with 10.3. I hate adobe. I dump down the pkg installer to the root of the HD during imaging and have a first boot script that installs it (via sudo installer) after a reboot. We’re uding JAMF Casper here… Did I mention I hate adobe?

my theory is that Apple stopped including by default Flash in the OS because of this. They just do not want to repack every time

btw last image creation didn’t quite like flash player at all, hopefully Munki is pushing it.

What and where files are you repacking? only two files in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins ?

Guess I’m not alone in having issues:

    In Snow Leopard:
It’s not installing the right version. It installs version 10.1 even though it is version 10.3 that is being used. I’ve confirmed that the pkg is legit by running it manually. If I go directly to the System Preference pane, it will say I am running 10.1. If I do a check, it tells me to upgrade. If I open up Firefox it even tells me that one of my plug-ins needs to be updated pointing to Flash 10.1. After updating manually, everything is good to go and I’m listed as running 10.3.

    In Lion:
It displays the Flash pane in System Preferences, but when I go to detect what version is running, none are actually running! If I open up Firefox to detect whether its installed, nothing shows up at all for it under the plug-ins. After updating manually, everything is good to go and I’m listed as running 10.3.

    Should I be re-packaging Flash?
