have you confirmed that it is rendezvous’s fault; have you tried turning rendezvous back on to see if the machine’s connection stabilises ?

how exactly did you manage to turn off rendezvous? did you just un-tick the ‘Enable Rendezvous registration’ in the AFP settings?

    ok my bad.

its turns out my test client machine, a G4/400pci is one model too old to boot from netboot2, which is why it was failing.
i tried it with my powerbook and it worked fine.

just in case anyone else is curious, you don’t need to have anything in the netinfo at /config/NetBootServer
you can add the /NetBootServer netinfo domain subdirectory by hand if you want, just to stop the warning message appearing in your netboot logs.

    thanks anyway.

ok after a little more research i am more confused:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107871

suggests i can just ignore the fact that /config/NetBootServer doesn’t exist in Netinfo (although the article is really clear about whether they mean all the time, or only when not using netboot. not).
    equally:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106896

suggests i can just create the entry in my netinfo if i need to tweak settings.

    but, on the other hand:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60415

has an illustration of a rather plump /config/NetBootServer
admittedly this is from server 1.2 and things may (hopefully) have changed.

    any ideas?
    thanks again.

i don’t know how you’d setup your home mac to answer incoming calls. but once connected i expect simply turning on ‘internet connection sharing’ on your home mac (or leaving it on all the time) would give your laptop remote access.

apple advertises that the airport basestation can be configured to accept incoming phone calls and establish a connection to machines on its network. i don’t know if this extends to a connection to the wan as well ?

i’m sure its possible, i think the airport basestation is a better way to go, since it doesn’t require a mac to be on all the time etc. but i’ve no idea if it’d work.

here in the uk you can get free dialup (still paying call charges) so you could setup an account over here and only pay the international call charge to get a connection 😉

    doh!

figured it out. mm, i couldn’t connect from the other users as they had no default Login Shell.

pity it doesn’t give you a more useful error message (ssh just reported bad password and wouldn’t connect).

    thanks anyways.

i think you’ll find the other ram is soldered to the motherboard, so unless you are super handy with a very very small soldering-iron i think you’re stuck.

wait until 1gb modules get a bit cheaper and throw one of those in the bottom slot.

anyways, isn’t this forum meant to be about osxserver ? rather than laptop hardware mods!
