This is a server realted function question applied to a client OS.

I have a cable modem. With it comes no dial up access. I travel frequently and I don’t want to have to pay for Juno or anything else.

What I would like to do is to be able to dial in to my OS X machine while I’m on the road (I know its long distance but I don’t care about that right now) and access the internet. In essense, I’d be my own micro ISP. With all the UNIX goop under the hood there HAS to be a way to do this right? I don’t want to remotely control my home Mac, I want to be able to dial in, be assigned an IP, and surf away.

    Possible?

i don’t know how you’d setup your home mac to answer incoming calls. but once connected i expect simply turning on ‘internet connection sharing’ on your home mac (or leaving it on all the time) would give your laptop remote access.

apple advertises that the airport basestation can be configured to accept incoming phone calls and establish a connection to machines on its network. i don’t know if this extends to a connection to the wan as well ?

i’m sure its possible, i think the airport basestation is a better way to go, since it doesn’t require a mac to be on all the time etc. but i’ve no idea if it’d work.

here in the uk you can get free dialup (still paying call charges) so you could setup an account over here and only pay the international call charge to get a connection 😉

    alex.
