    hey all,

i am trying to setup netboot, i have images, shares, nfs/afp/http, dhcp, etc, but it doesn’t work, the client machines take a very long time to decide that netboot isn’t available so i am assuming that they see the server but then fail to boot from it.
in the ServerAdmin app the netboot logs has a line:
ni_pathsearch ‘/config/NetBootServer’ failed: No such directory

one of the other forum post here pointed me to look in Netinfo for this entry, i looked and there is no NetBootServer entry in the config directory.

so my question is, could someone who has a working netboot system tell me what should be in the netinfo table at /config/NetBootServer, so i may create it ?

or alternatively tell me that i’m on completely the wrong track.

    thanks,

    alex.

ok after a little more research i am more confused:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107871

suggests i can just ignore the fact that /config/NetBootServer doesn’t exist in Netinfo (although the article is really clear about whether they mean all the time, or only when not using netboot. not).
    equally:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106896

suggests i can just create the entry in my netinfo if i need to tweak settings.

    but, on the other hand:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60415

has an illustration of a rather plump /config/NetBootServer
admittedly this is from server 1.2 and things may (hopefully) have changed.

    any ideas?
    thanks again.

    ok my bad.

its turns out my test client machine, a G4/400pci is one model too old to boot from netboot2, which is why it was failing.
i tried it with my powerbook and it worked fine.

just in case anyone else is curious, you don’t need to have anything in the netinfo at /config/NetBootServer
you can add the /NetBootServer netinfo domain subdirectory by hand if you want, just to stop the warning message appearing in your netboot logs.

    thanks anyway.

    alex.
