For anyone who cares its a case of modifying the “ssl_cipher_list =” line in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf.

I’ll have a look into Squid, though if anyone could walk me through compiling it on OS X, I would be most grateful. Odd that they don’t have a binary download for X.

What I am trying to do is allow access only to the iTunes Music store (and one or two other sites), but I want to pipe all traffic for it via our affiliate account.

Could this be something to do with kerberos? How could I confirm or rule that out?

You only need to delete the CatalogURL string on a client running Tiger. It isn’t there by default. Deleting it will refer SU back to Apple.

I think so. Mine is still running, but its slower than using the default online one.

I finally managed to answer one by myself!
    Thanks anyway though.

Aha. I see the capitals are important here…..

    Many thanks to all.

com.apple.SoftwareUpdate doesn’t seem to exist by default. If I should need to, how can I set it back to default to use Apple’s SU servers?

I did try that once. Perhaps I’ll try it again.

OK, solved that last bit, so my software update server is now working well.

One last question: Is there any way to connect a Mac to an SU server without having to bind to a directory service?

Many thanks to all for the helpful contributions so far.

Forgot to mention hardware: You will need an unlimited copy of tiger server, so I expect you’ll find that for the cost of the software + iMac (or certainly a PowerMac), you could have got an Xserve with the software included.
A G5 Quad would give best performance of course, but this would cost accordingly….

I’m no expert, but I think I can contribute to a couple of your questions.

1: Can’t really help here, but I’d be surprised if it weren’t possible to authenticate HP/UX. Not sure how easy it would be.

2:Never used the built-in mail server, but Kerio Mail Server is a good one. It does most of what M$ Exchange does for about a tenth of the price. The spam and AV filters on that are dead simple.

3: In theory, getting Tiger Server to run a VPN is quite easy. Not had a proper go at it yet. Its on my to-do list.

4: For this one, you should look into something called Terminal Services. I don’t know too much about it, but my Boss uses it on a PowerBook to hop from one windows server to the next.

I don’t suppose I’ve been too much help, but hopefully I’ve been some.

Now that last bit was helpful.

Tried it on my MDD after killing serveradmin (wasn’t starting any services at all). I then ran swupdate on its own and this seemed to work, but I couldn’t get Open Directory to run (didn’t have time to restart at the time), so I gave up on that one (its not the most reliable test rig, it has junk like Halo and Front Row installed on it).

The Xserve got its drive module back (or more accurately, replaced), so I wiped it and put a clean install on it. Set it up as before, added the “/” to the end of the SU URL pref and bingo! PowerBook in our showroom happily updates from the Xserve.

Tried logging into the SU user from another machine to do the same again, and we’re back to the old NSURL error message. Why does it only work on one machine??????

    Terminal returns a 0.

System.log just lists the command: serveradmin start swupdate.

The Server Admin app is just beachballing…..

OK, I was all set to try thi fix out, but when I arrived at work I found my boss had pulled the drive module from the Xserve and sent it to a customer as an emergency replacement!

I have switched to my home Tiger server test rig on an old MDD G4 tower. Trouble is, the software update service won’t even start on this one. It just spins until I quit Server Admin.

I’ve never really had to do much system maintenance on a server install. Are there a few basic principles to troubleshooting problems with services not running?

I tried Diskwarrior, but that didn’t help at all.

OK, tried checking that the pref was written properly, terminal says it doesn’t exist. Is there anything I can do about that?
