Many thanks for the response. I will give that a try.

I recently tried to setup an Xserve as a software update server. It has been running for sometime but only as a QMaster node for compressing video. It wasn’t running any services at all.
I setup an open directory on it and created a “software update” user. I mirrored updates from Apple and when they had downloaded I started the softwre update service.
I then bound an iMac test rig to the directory and logged in as the software update user.
A user folder was created on the iMac called “99”. I didn’t check ownership, but it was the software update users home folder.
When I checked on the Xserve, a folder had been created in Users called “99”. I took no steps to enable mobile home directories.

Can anyone explain whats going on here?

I was thinking about a low cost RAID unit. I was considering dedicating an old PCI PowerMac G3 for the purpose. I thought I could use some sort of PCi RAID card for the drives, and run it over the network. Also wondered about the possibility of using link aggregation (if thats the right term) to boost the throughput. An extra gigabit ethernet card in each machine (RAID and server) is no great expenditure. The trick would be the software. If it can be done under Jaguar server or Panther server, I figure I can pick up a cheap license since we have two Xserves at work which shipped with Panther server, and have been upgraded since, so the original licenses are sitting about unused. The other way to do it would be to run some flavour of *NIX. I have no idea how good an idea this sort of setup is.

I am most likely in way over my head here, but I will account an experience I had in case it helps anyone.

I had to bind a couple of macs to an AD a while back, I triple checked everything and they kept failing to authenticate. It turned out that there was some kind of encryption enabled by default on the AD (and on windows clients) which was not even supported on OS X (Pretty sure it was Tiger). Switching this off on the AD server solved the problem instantly and the customer never called back. Having said that, they had a service contract with another Apple Centre, they called us because their contracted guys had given up trying to fix the problem.
I found the solution using Google.

Just wish I could rmember the name of the encryption that was causing the problem….

Hi Z, thanks for your reply, I appreciate the help.

OK. I was original using two WGM windows, one authenticated to AD, one to OD on a client with both directory services listed under its search path in Directory access.
On trying to drag users from the AD list into the OD group members window, the cursor would get the green + button, and the border of the members list went bold black, but on releasing the mouse button, no users from AD would add to the group. I tried to do it using just the one WGM window and the drawer as you suggested, but the AD would not appear on the menu at the top of the drawer.

    Any idea why?

I am unfortunate enough to own what is possibly the least reliable B&W G3 in existence. Someone generously removed the connector for the firewire module from the logic board before I bought it, which I suspect doesn’t help matters. It is also a rev.a of course.

Since I built it myself, it has neither stock HD or IDE cables. It too is happy running OS 9 with all manner of different RAM installed, but it came to OS X (Panther in this case eventually, but Jag to start with) it was a different matter. First trick I tried was to remove all RAM except one stick of 256MB PC133 7.5ns. After a couple of attempts, this would usually get all the way through the installer and all was well. Putting other RAM back in afterwards would screw things up again.

After running it under X for a few days/weeks however, it would eventually stop booting again. Sometimes DU would fix, sometimes Diskwarrior. Often another clean install was the only way.

I gather you can get away with more than one piece of RAM if it all matches and its all less than 10ns latency. The 10ns is no good. Must be 8ns or 7.5ns, and as I say all matching. (I have a feeling the firmware update mentioned above might disable 10ns or slower stuff, but I might be thinking about one of the old PowerBooks)

I gather that the correct cable will help, since the ones shipped with these Macs were not identical to standard IDE, but it looks like you have that. (If it has Foxconn tags at either end, thats probably the original).
I understand that the only way to truly combat the data corruption issue is to install a PCI drive controller. ATA, SATA or SCSI is fine. Its the rev.a drive controller which is the problem. It reads OK (mostly) but has a problem writing to any drive bigger than the stock 6 or 12GB ones.

I have another rev.a at work which runs happily with mixed, slow RAM and oversized ATA drives on its on-board channels. Right up to Tiger I think. The complete opposite of my own.
