ParticipantSetting up a block like that for 300 users is not an elegant solution…..

ParticipantThank you. Checking the manual would help. But I have trouble finding where Apple defines the Sites directory globally.
In httpd.conf they define the name of the .htaccess file. They say:
##### For Mac OS X Server: It’s OK to modify this directive if necessary but note that
##### by default AllowOveride is None in all virtual hosts.
I don’t care about the virtual hosts, just the users home directory. I cannot see any
line there defining the Users home directory other than
## UserDir: The name of the directory which is appended onto a user’s home
## directory if a ~user request is received.
##
##### For Mac OS X Server: It’s OK to modify this directive if necessary, but note that
##### the default sites directory created for a new user is “Sites”, and that
##### personal websharing is not supported on Mac OS X Server.
##
UserDir Sites
But configtest will not allow me to put an AllowOverride there. It looks like I will need to be spoonfed

ParticipantI must be thick or something….
Realms deal with specific directories. I want to allow users to lock directories they wish with a .htaccess file… How do I do that?
hetjan
ParticipantNo, I have no reason not to. Just didn’t think it was possible since this is not covered in the manual…

ParticipantWhen I run into problems like this…on client machines though…I boot in single-user mode and run fsck.
After this I run SystemStarter and then do a diskutil repairPermissions / from the console. This usually fixes everything up, although not all problems.
This is, of course, a generic fix and may not fix anything in your case but I hope it helps.

ParticipantSoftRAID notes the ability to start up from a mirrored volume as “Coming Soon”…
hetjan
ParticipantIf all else fails you could buy a _real_ SCSI RAID card…

ParticipantThat’s the beauty of Fink…it is so easy to turn on and off!
Configuring Fink from the CLI can never be as easy as the GUI tools…but you can install webmin with it too…then the configuring becomes even easier than the Apple GUI stuff.
your mileage may, of course, vary.
hetjan
ParticipantTry playing around with Fink. It can be installed along with Apple’s Apache (with Apple’s Apache disabled, of course) and shouldn’t interfere with your setup otherwise.
But as always, RTFM…. 😉

Participant10.3 has migration tools to migrate to LDAP.
Apple will be going with LDAP in the future, and will phase NetInfo out in stages beginning with 10.3.
You should consider this when planning a directory.hetjan
Participant…its “on” alright…its just that the echo in spacious caves is long. Sometimes you need to shout to hear your own echo….

ParticipantThis info is stored in the whois database. Your registrar can edit this for you…you can usually do it yourself via a set of forms on their page.

Participant[quote:a265cc5f09=”MacTroll”]Also, you probably need to run Network Image Utility, if that’s the name, at least once. This sets up NetBoot the first time around and will probably create a /config/NetBootServer in NetInfo.

I did this and now Server Settings crashes on me when I open the DHCP module. I’m guessing I’ll have to take a different approach to this…after I reformat the server and set it up the way I want it
…on monday

ParticipantI would think so. You should always turn off all services you don’t need anyways.
I’ve had a scenario where serversettingsd would do this. I checked the disk (permissions and all) and jjust killed it and it hasn’t happened again. -
