Background: I work for a relatively small wholesale printer. We have a network of about five or so Macintosh we use for everything computer related. We have two Power Mac Dual Processor 1.25 Ghz G4, two iMac – older models, and two beige G3 towers at 300 and 266 Mhz. We also have aquired an XServe Dual Processor 1 Ghz with 1 Gig of Ram.

We have a limited knowlege of the Server software – more familiar with IP 6.1 which we are moving away from – but I have managed to setup Netinfo domains for production computers and office computers.

Here is where my question comes. I have a couple users that needed access to both office and production computers so I placed them in netinfo root. Well, how can I make a group share point that just the production domain and one root user can get to. This is probably a very simple problem and I am just missing the answer as I read through all the many manuals I have printed out.

Here is where I need opinions. I read someone’s post on this board and it said with 10.3, Netinfo became simply a legacy option as it moved to LDAP. What does this mean for me, now that I finally am starting to understand Netinfo? If we upgrade will I need to convert or just leave well enough alone. If I convert, what would be involved. I have a limited amount of time to work on these things as I am also in charge of design.

10.3 has migration tools to migrate to LDAP.

Apple will be going with LDAP in the future, and will phase NetInfo out in stages beginning with 10.3.
You should consider this when planning a directory.
