Rather than pay Apple another $500 I’d just like to upgrade my OS X Server 10.2.8 – specifically apache and mysql. Seems like Aaron Faby and Marc Liyanage both have packages available.

I have heard that Apple’s installation is somewhat different than your usual Unix install – so how to go about doing this ??

PHP package from Marc Liyanage upgraded whatever Apple had installed with no problem.

    Thanks in advance.

Try playing around with Fink. It can be installed along with Apple’s Apache (with Apple’s Apache disabled, of course) and shouldn’t interfere with your setup otherwise.

    But as always, RTFM…. 😉

    A.

Thanks for the advice. I don’t have any problem installing a package from the folks I mentioned above. Its just I’m not sure how to switch off what I’ve got and switch on the new stuff. Configuring mysql again is not something I look forward to being somewhat CLI challenged 🙂 And then what happens if I do upgrade to Panther after doing this ?

Don’t know quite what to do actually.

Anyway, thanks again for the help.

That’s the beauty of Fink…it is so easy to turn on and off!

Configuring Fink from the CLI can never be as easy as the GUI tools…but you can install webmin with it too…then the configuring becomes even easier than the Apple GUI stuff.

your mileage may, of course, vary.
