    i would check http://www.apple.com/server/documentation

also, keep in mind that there is a lot more change in the apple server world every year than in the mac server world, which makes it hard to write a book that stays relevant – any books on bsd would probably be good though.

also, apple (for better or worse) keeps a tight handle on it’s assets (ie, server technologies), and so they like people to learn in their classes to ensure that best practices are followed (and so that they make lots of money on training).

seems like these guys have some kind of solution.

they mention in their “install” section that “the hardest part of getting our solution running may be installing mod_perl” – well, I think that mod_perl is on of the pre-loaded modules in os x server apache (10.3.3) and just has to be activated with a check box.

however, I’m not an expert at asp.

seems that postfix sometimes does not start after enabling smtp – check overview in server admin to see if all services are running – command “start postfix” from terminal can help – however, I had to reboot server “shutdown -r now” from remote ssh session.

not to dispute apple’s high (but much lower than ms) upgrade price, BUT,

from my (fairly) extensive experience with 10 server, i’d say that any beginning user should not mess with anything but 10.3.

bear in mind that the 10 user liscence only limits the number of concurrent appleshare/afp connections.

anyone working with apple server hardware/software in a multi-platform server environment will see good and bad points.

i find that it helps to keep in mind that currently, apple’s stuff is definitely on a steep development curve, and probably not ready for core enterprise deployment yet.

HOWEVER, for a lot of organizations (like many of my clients), apple’s attractive price/performance ratio is a big selling point.

about software raid – as of 10.3.3, one can now rebuild software raid arrays on the fly (ie, in a hot system), apple says. also, you CAN be alerted to hardware issues by making use of the Server Monitor app – i’ve used it to spot a degrading software striped raid on an xserve, and fix the problem before it got messy. btw, this app only works with xserves, not towers or other apple units.

but, please, steve, give us an xserve with hardware-controlled raid!

…is a good service for this. also DNSupdate is a handy updater daemon with graphical front-end, though a little cryptic in the way the interface works.

that is why apple give you multiple check boxes – what is the plugin for more secure webmail?
