I could use priority MX records easily if I had more than 1 server, but I don’t – I am trying to multihome a single server.
As I said before, the way I would usually do it with one server, one IP is like this:
server.domain.com – A record – IP Address
domain.com – MX record – 10 – server.domain.com
With 1 server and 2 IPs, I have found it more difficult.
I can’t just add another MX record because then I won’t be specifying the backup IP anywhere and there would be no resolution.
If I specify the 2nd IP and domain like above then I have to use CNAMES to alias the server (because there is only 1 server), but you can’t use a combination of CNAMES and non-CNAMES in the same entry – so I can’t do it that way.
I can’t find anything in either ‘DNS and BIND’ or the ‘DNS Cookbook’ about this, so any information from anyone else would be great!
Yes, you can have the network user use a home folders using OD – this is especially good, if as you say, your users are dealing with large files and/or you are on a 100-base-t network (like me :()…
How you do it: set up your users with Workgroup Manager as normal. Go to the Home area and chose /Users. That will force the user to have a local home on whatever machine he logs in on. If /Users isn’t there, click on the + button and enter ‘/Users/[short name of the user]. Click OK.
Next time anyone logs into that account, they should be using the home folder on their computer.
I have heard a lot of people saying that they have had problems with 10.4.8 and AFP. On one forum I read that running the 10.4.8 combo update solved the issues, but why I really can’t tell you as I have not had these issues my self.
I have done my ACHDS and am now taking my ACDT and ACTC next week.
I would say you have a good chance at passing if you can handle the day to day stuff. You have to make sure you have a decent handle on Open Directory (also for the ACTC as well), which I am not terribly good at!
Regarding Apple based employment – I have found a lot of positions open recently, you just have to know where to look!
Try going to online agencies, such as reed.co.uk, there are quite a few positions there…
Good Luck!
