Participanthi,
i’m new to AFP548 and fairly new to OSX Server.
our school has two OSX xservers and a windows2003 AD server. the person prior to me was the one who set everything up, she left and didn’t leave much in the way documentation of what she did and why. so, i’m working on learning much that is new.
from my understanding of the system all users are created in AD where their home folder paths are specified. those home folders reside on the OD servers, both of these run as open directory masters. the client machines are all mac G5’s with the active directory plugin (via direcotry access) set to use AFP (“Use UNC path from Active Directory to derive network home location”).
all was going well until i updated one of the OD servers to 10.4.8 from, i believe, 10.4.3. now, all of the clients who were using that server for their home folders are unable to allow a login for those users. the general “You are unable to log in to the user account “xxx” at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occured. The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help.” error dialog appears.
this error only happens when i attempt a logon of a user who’s home folder is on the updated server. when i attempt a logon on the same workstation as a user who’s home folder is on the non-updated server (currently are 10.4.7) i have no trouble, the logon completes and i have access to the correct home folder.
two other observations: first, when, using directory access–active directory plugin, i change the network protocol to smb the users who have their home folders on the updated server are now able to logon. but, the users who have thei home folders on the non-updated server are not able to logon, the reverse of the paragraph above.
second, when i am at the console of the updated server and AFP is the AD plugin setting i am able to logon as a user whose home folder is on the updated server.
the other weird thing that happened when i update the server to 10.4.8 was that the password for the directory administrator was lost/reset.
i hope someone with far more knowledge than i can help me sort this out.
thanks.

ParticipantI have heard a lot of people saying that they have had problems with 10.4.8 and AFP. On one forum I read that running the 10.4.8 combo update solved the issues, but why I really can’t tell you as I have not had these issues my self.
Try running it – it might help… 😕
