ParticipantLooks like its not just me… I confirmed this with a couple people. I wonder why they would have changed this.

ParticipantIt was a silly problem.. I just freaked out. Thanks fot the post though.
I just used Netinfo and it worked. I’m pretty sure you can’t use LDAP unless its been setup for LDAP with 10.2.8. But I got it working.

ParticipantAre you using managed Finder preferences? This will happen if you use Simplified Finder.

ParticipantIt doesn’t seem to be an issue for just a PDC to host home directories.. People do this all the time. The bug is when you try to host home directories on another “domain member” server.

Participantcan you ping an outside IP like 216.239.57.99 (which is google). If you can you probably just need to set up forwarders in your DNS. Is the server your current DNS provider?
If you can’t ping an outside address its hard to say, but I would say NAT is setup wrong on the server.

Participantahhh figured it out. If you select multiple entries and add the server path it will auto put in the shortname. Apple was thinking once again. Nice.

Participanterrrr.. I feel dumb. Thanks for the help.
On another note is there a way to do this globally so I don’t have to specify the exact location for each user? maybe something like “/server/$username”. Just so I don’t have to enter the user name in the path for each user.
Thanks again.

ParticipantAre you saying to manually enter the home directory in WGM? Because right now I’m just selecting it from a list of shares (AFP) this has always work for me in the past. This shouldn’t matter but the all users use both mac’s and pc’s.

ParticipantOkay I tried this myself and it didn’t work. What I mean by didn’t work is that the home directories would not map when I user logged in. But the user could login via the PDC (the home directory would not be mapped but my login script would work that mapped other shares). After I was logged in I was able to browse to the other server and see my home directory.
My problem is the mapping of the users home directory. this would only work on the PDC… I even called Apple and they told me the same thing. So was I misinformed and if so why wouldn’t it work for me?
It seemed like it should work seeing how I could browse to the second server and see the home directory on the root of server along with other shares. This is exactly what happens when its on the PDC except the drive will map.

ParticipantBut 1.3/1.21b is the latest firmware version and what I pointed you to was a RAID admin update and firmware update. I figured it was a firmware issue and was making sure you were upto date. Glad you got it sorted.

Participant1. Make sure DNS forward and reverse are working (important)
2. Server needs to be a open directory master.
3. Select your “Users” share and make sure you create a automount record for it (under Network Mount)
4. Set up a user and select that home directory (if you don’t see it, you didn’t do #3 correctly)
5. Set up the client using Directory Access and LDAPv3Something like that.

ParticipantDepends on how much you push your current machine and the size of the files. OSX server would seem to be a bit much for an environment like yours. But you could always use it for other things like your website, email, firewall, DHCP, etc. So doing this might justify the cost but just as a file server for 2-3 machines doesn’t seem worth it.

ParticipantMake sure you have the latest firmware:

ParticipantOr you can just manage prefs of that group/user/computer and put the share as a login item (and check use login name and password). This will mount the share automatically. Make sure you don’t use guest and you use a real user because it will try to mount as guest if you do. I think this is what your looking for.
Ross
ParticipantOh Yea! When??
