    Are you using Password Server?

If so you’re screwed with the passwords. You can’t get them out.

    Directory Access => Services Tab
Check LDAPv3 and click the Configure button
Click the arrow to the left of Show Options
    Click New
Give this a configartion. This can be anything like Exchange Address Book
Put the Server Name or IP address in the next column
LDAP Mappings change to Active Directory.
Uncheck Use DHCP-supplied LDAP server at the top (if you want to, I do)
    Click OK
    Click Apply

    Contacts Tab
    Search > Custom Path
    click Add
Your newly added ldap server should be in the Available Directories
Double click on it to add it
    Click Apply

Reboot for the changes to take effect

    >>Is there any reason I should be using 2?
Not unless there is something wrong with the web server now. Otherwise don’t worry about it.

    >> What are its main improvements?
Check apache’s web site. I’m sure they have a FAQ on there somewhere.

    >>Why does Apple have it disabled?
Probably because it’s failry new and they’ve been using the older version for a while.

I’m gonna upgrade to 2 when Apple makes it the default webserver. Probably when Panther comes out.

In Server Settings under FTP i think in the last tab there is a drop down menu with 3 options.

One says home folder only – you don’t want that it won’t follow the links
one says home and root of the server – you don’t want that ’cause then users will see each others folders but sym links will work

You want the other option. I think it is home folders plus share points. Can’t remember exactly what it says but that will make the sym links work. Took me 2 weeks to figure that one out 👿

Aliases are only understood by the Finder. Instead of making an alias make a symobolic link.

    >>Cabbage…what do you mean block copy?
I mean block copy instead of copying file by file. Block copying is much faster.

Before NetRestore was released I used to boot up off a FireWire drive that had 2 partitions. The second partion was my “image”. I could put off that partition if I wanted it to. It had all the files for OS X. I’d run CCC to copy each [i:6deed460c6]file[/i:6deed460c6] from the second partition to the hard drive I wanted.

With NetRestore I made a compressed disk image (.dmg) of the second partition. I can keep this image anywhere since you can restore a drive locally, thru AFP or over HTTP with NetRestore. With the .dmg it copies at the block level and this is much faster than copying file by file.

[quote:eb0e14eedd]Currently, we use Carbon Copy Cloaner and physically go to the machines and connect up a FireWire drive to restore them, but I’m sure they’res a better way.[/quote:eb0e14eedd]

You can do it that way but use NetRestore and do a block copy off the FireWire disk. It is much faster then CCCing all the files from a FW Drive. For me a basic 10.2.6 image takes about 90 seconds.

You can also use Network Install since you have Jaguar Server.

It depends what kind of files they are going to be transferring back and forth. Their hole

I work for a printing company and we have 100 and Gigabit. For the people using FileMaker/MS Office/Email/Web Stuff there isn’t a problem. For the people retouching photos they have Gigabit. They are usually working on images in Photoshop that are over a 1.5 gigs. Average file is about 700mb.

Use Networked Home Directories for the Users. Their home folder will be what their “Backup Folder” used to be. You just need to back up the /Users on the server now and you’ve backed up everyone.

Start with a clean disc image of the latest os. Load that on each hard drive using NetRestore.

Keep all apps on each persons mac. Use Radmind to update the software on all the Macs.

    Server Settings.app => FTP

There is a drop down menu in the settings. You want to select the one that says Home Folders only

So I was told that sendmail isn’t working.

But it turns out that DNS servers weren’t changed when we switched ISP plans. After changing the DNS sendmail is working now. Going to do the other server tonite I hope.
