Solved it by archiving the OD database, settings up OD from scratch on 10.6 and restoring everyone from the archive.

The screen sharing thing is weird as it seems that sometimes it works normally and sometimes not. Seems to be a bug in the ARD client. If you use ARD you can connect fine, but Screen Sharing fails over bonjour.

Yes, 10.6 clients connect to 10.5 Server just fine. I also had the same error after upgrading my directory server to 10.6 Server and neither 10.5 or 10.6 clients could log in with the same error. Rolling the system back to 10.5 Server got things working again.
