Throwing my two cents worth in here…
On Xserver 10.4.8 ran into this same issue “logging in to the account failed”.
Taking a look at the Inspector on the two new users we created yeilded an appropriate AFP share point. However, the Windows share side (which we are creating for every new user) gave incorrect information. A hold over from moving the OD and changeip **NIGHTMARE** we went through.
Modifying the SMB entries to the local DNS side eg \\ns1\Profiles fixed the problem with the users logging in.
I suspect if we were to leave the stock SMB Windows configuration blank (default) that the AFP portion would be the only entry and thus not a concern.
