We’re having a little bit of a problem here at the school district I work at.

When we add the 10.3.5 machines to the NetInfo directory we have being served by a Mac OS X 10.2.8 Server. We can log in but get the error
“You are unable to log in to the user account “XYZ” at this time. Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred. The home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server. Contact your system administrator for help.”

We called Apple and they more or less told us it was a general error. And they couldn’t help us.

Trying to connect directly(afp://server/Users/XYZ)
to the home folder in the Finder produces this error
“Connecting to afp://server/Users/XYZ/ … The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in “afp://server/Users/XYZ/” could not be read or written. (Error Code -36)”

But if we connect just to afp://server then we can navigate to Users and XYZ and be able to read and write to it like normal.

So anyone have any ideas? Its quite frustrating. One idea that was thought up is that the hubs and switches aren’t passing the packets correctly. But I tried just plugging the two machines directly into each other. And got the same results as above.

I’m having the same problem with 10.3.5.
All but two users are working fine and the other two get the login error message.
I deleted one users account and tried again and it still errors out.
It seems to be something with the Users Home directory.

????

I saw this problem myself (Server 10.3.5). I was able to fix it this way.

In Workgroup Manager select the user account having the problem…go to the Inspector…

Make sure the “dsAttrTypeStandard:NFSHomeDirectory” attribute is present. In my case, it was missing and I too got the same error. I had to add it to the user account with a complete path to their home, then it worked again.

I have no idea why it vanished or if this is what your problem is…worth a shot. Good luck…

Just wanted to let you know that I ran into this problem (on 10.3.5 Server) as well and fixed it in a different way…

The dsAttrTypeStandard:NFSHomeDirectory attribute was present (just NFSHomeDirectory, actually), but contained a reference to my servers machine name:

/Network/Servers/server.mydomain.com/Volumes/File Server RAID/Users/gabe

I just set-up a local zone file for server.mydomain.com and AFP logins worked normally again.

I am completely new to macs in general, and am having this same problem on the 10.3.9 server we are running at my location. Any ideas as to what I can do?

(: I was just having a simlar problem and ended up being able to connect and mount the server by removing an extra spurious space at the end of the afp address I copied and pasted, but still can’t see the server in the network folder

Throwing my two cents worth in here…

On Xserver 10.4.8 ran into this same issue “logging in to the account failed”.

Taking a look at the Inspector on the two new users we created yeilded an appropriate AFP share point. However, the Windows share side (which we are creating for every new user) gave incorrect information. A hold over from moving the OD and changeip **NIGHTMARE** we went through.

Modifying the SMB entries to the local DNS side eg \\ns1\Profiles fixed the problem with the users logging in.

I suspect if we were to leave the stock SMB Windows configuration blank (default) that the AFP portion would be the only entry and thus not a concern.
