I’m a bit confused. I’ve been using InstaDMG since last Fall. What do you mean in regards to setting up numbered folders? Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve never actually run instadmg.bash (directly anyways) so I’m not sure what you mean when referring to using the -s flag for it.

I’ve always used instaup2date.py (which I presume calls instadmg.bash to handle the OS stuff) to create the OS image with packages. I could be completely off here, but should I then be running:
sudo instaup2date.py -p -s custom.catalog

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding anything here. I know that both InstaUp2Date and InstaDMG are two different components that work together, but I just need some clarification here.

Also of interest, I know for the longest it’s always been recommended to avoid building images on OS X Server. I’m wondering if that is still the case with Lion since it appears the server component is just an app itself.

Thanks again for any clarification you can provide.

So now that Lion is officially out, just wanted to bump this thread. Will the latest svn support Lion or is there anything we must do on our end to get it working? On the same note, will it be possible to get a Lion image with and without the recovery partition? I can see the recovery partition being useful in some cases, but not in other cases.

On the same note, I’m wondering if the recovery partition can be modified so that it recovers the Lion image that we had just created using InstaDMG rather than the generic OS installation that Lion is probably recovering from (I haven’t actually tested the recovery partition feature yet so I’m not sure what exactly it recovers to).

perhaps you could try a before and after snapshot with a packaging program to see what files are being created or modified?

The latest svn already has 10.6 catalog up-to-date. But the iLife 11 catalog could certainly use the update. Just going add this as well for iLife 09:

I’d have no problem sending you the patched update 14.1.2. Check your PM. Also, I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I’m using the original Office 2011 disc (not Office 2011 SP1). Just grasping at straws here.

On another note, it appears that after writing that tutorial I am now unable to get Communicator 13.1.1 to work (but 13.1.0 works fine)! Bizzare. Malroy, could you provide the hash you get after applying the patch?

Download from MS gives me:
sha1:4e374af45d09ea861bd2eb6a59ecc1648de7a670

After applying Office this patcher: dl.dropbox.com/u/11466/InstaDMG%20PatchOfficeUpdate%200.4.dmg
sha1:18e49c02bde4114e76fca167f54b4e48fa1b656c

Perhaps you could send me the Communicator update patched in a similar fashion? Just PM me if you can’t post it here.

Malroy,

Here is what I’m getting for my checksum before and after applying the two patchers on 14.1.2:
Before: Office 2011 14.1.2 Update Office 2011 14.1.2 Update.mpkg sha1:d6197dba51387ce19931d367e278bdc2ba45ca37
After: Office 2011 14.1.2 Update Office 2011 14.1.2 Update.mpkg sha1:ed99b2b0dfc658cd3180fb628d98e7a518e1f6e4

Could you confirm that’s what you get as well?

Also what order are you running the updates in your catalog? I have mine set as follows:
Office Installer
14.1.0
14.1.2

Edit: I noticed you said you dropped the update on the applet twice. I think this is the mistake causing your issue. You need to run through two patchers, not twice on one patcher. I provided the links to all three patchers you will need, two of which are required for Office 14.1.0 and 14.1.2. Could you confirm that you did indeed run the updates through both patchers?

I think the issue is that you’re trying to use the gray restore disk which you’re not supposed to be using. Doesn’t mean it won’t work, but it’s not recommended. You need to use a retail disc or a reference disc. The latest reference disc is 10.6.3 that I know of. Now in theory, I suppose a 10.6.6 disc should work if you apply 10.6.8 combo update. Is the machine you’re running up to date with the latest combo update? Try applying the combo update, not the delta.

Also try to download r423. Seems it came out just today.

I hope this makes it as clear as possible for anyone that runs into this:

In order to get Office 2011, you will need to modify a few files (described already in this thread to some extent). Rather than manually modifying the files, the links below will provide a patcher applet for Office and its updates which does the necessary modifications to get Office to work with InstaDMG. The way the applets work is simple: drag the Office installer or update .pkg onto the patcher applet. It will run the scripts in the applet which will modify the .pkg for you.

I tested this today and it works. Here are the patchers you will need:

Apply to Office 2011 Installer
dl.dropbox.com/u/11466/Patch%20Office%202011%20Installer/Version%203/PatchOffice2011Installer.dmg

Apply to Office 14.1.0 and 14.1.2 (and Communicator 13.1.0 and 13.1.1 if you have a volume license)
dl.dropbox.com/u/11466/InstaDMG%20PatchOfficeUpdate%200.4.dmg

Apply to Office 14.1.0 and 14.1.2
dl.dropbox.com/u/429559/patchOffice2011_1410Update_v041.dmg

It doesn’t matter in what order you patch Office 14.1.0 and 14.1.2.

Download links to updates:
*Communicator 13.1.0: download.microsoft.com/download/6/6/2/6622B710-155F-4CB8-B625-6CA0421455DC/Communicator13.1_ALL.dmg

Communicator 13.1.1: download.microsoft.com/download/3/0/F/30FCD0B0-3B03-4621-BF6D-72515B9B80BA/Communicator13.1.1_ALL.dmg

Office 14.1.0: microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=41&srcfamilyid=ef1e612f-d8e3-4628-9fe4-ad136f0debd3&srcdisplaylang=en&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2f5%2fE%2fE%2f5EE76E3B-8D17-4BB1-AF4A-A33D38C8810F%2fOffice2011-1410UpdateEN.dmg

Office 14.1.2: microsoft.com/downloads/info.aspx?na=41&srcfamilyid=3c58555c-1eba-42fe-a10f-b30af9031e44&srcdisplaylang=en&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsoft.com%2fdownload%2f0%2f3%2f0%2f03025205-2044-4CE7-96C9-34E5157510FF%2fOffice2011-1412UpdateEN.dmg

Please note the following: once you create a checksum hash for these packages in your catalog file, you may find that the hash will change after your first run with these packages in an image. When you try to run InstaDMG a second time you may get an error message, you just need to make sure the checksum hash is valid is all. Not sure exactly what is changing except that something is definitely changing. All I can tell you is that it works. If someone disagrees or finds I made a mistake, by all means feel free to correct me.

*You may also get away with not having to use Communicator 13.1.0. It appears that 13.1.1 includes 13.1.0. You can test this on your own. I just know that it didn’t make a difference either way to include both updates.

Hope this has been helpful. If I have time maybe, I’ll find a way to add it to the wikis since there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of instructions on how to get Office 2011 installed via InstaDMG.

EDIT: The spamfilter absolutely blows on this forum. I had to take out h t t p : / / www. in all of the links just to get this post in. I’m grateful for the resource this forum provides, but it sure is frustrating to deal with the spam filter here. Can’t the spam filter be toned down just a bit? This may just go unnoticed but hopefully someone who manages the board can do something about it.

So I tried to use Composer 8.1 but had no luck. None of the Office 2011 Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint open up.

Here is the error I get: http://pastebin.com/J0tXKcAE

This blows. I don’t have munki setup and probably won’t any time soon. I’m going to see if re-packaging the Office 14.1.0 in Composer works.

So I’ve been doing some research and I found this interesting piece of information: http://mailman.intermedia.net/pipermail/casper/2010-October/008795.html

I was comparing a modified 14.0.2 patch to a non-modified 14.1.0 patch (when I say modified, I’m talking about using the droplet app provided in this thread). I looked at the distribution.dist file for both patches and noticed this piece of information in the 14.1.0 distribution.dist file
function VolumeMeetsOSRequirements() {
return (TargetVolumeMountpointIsRoot() && volumeOs1058OrHigher() && volumeHasUpdatableVersion()) ;
}

function TargetVolumeMountpointIsRoot()
{
var result = false;
try
{
result = my.target.mountpoint == "/";
} catch (e) {}

if (!result)
{
my.result.type = ‘Fatal’;
}
return result;
The link I provided earlier indicates that this was only a problem for Casper, not InstaDMG. But I’m wondering if there has been a change since then? Maybe I’m getting close to the issue or I’m completely off base. But I’ll continue to do some more research and testing.

Just to make sure I’m getting this right, I can add the general 10.6.7 combo update to my image, then add the 10.6.7 2011-MBP update into the image as well and this image would work on any Mac supporting Snow Leopard?

What a pain this is. I figured that 10.6.7 would be a universal update that included the early 2011 MBPs. This is rather frustrating. 👿

So I just tried again to create another image with 10.6.5. Same result except this image was slightly under 1GB. It’s as if it’s completely ignoring the InstallerChoices I’ve selected. Did I mess something up there?
