    Nevermind… I was running in doofus-mode.

Did -r for restore instead of -b for backup.

    Old dog, new tricks.

Got it running. I opened the files with pico and they looked like garbage. Seems I saved them in a non-UNIX format. Resaved as UNIX with BBEdit Lite and now they run.

However, the mailback script doesn’t dump anything into it’s folders, though (ODBack appears to work OK). Is that because there are no files to backup? I have a few user test emails that should get saved, but there’s no sign of them. Are the user mailboxes stored elsewhere? I’m running IMAP.

Tried that, now it’s -rwxr-xr-x, and I’m getting the same error.

I review my firewall logs every day and there’s a blizzard of activity. I dump it all into a FileMaker database and filter out everything aimed at well-known Windows exploit ports (e.g. 1025->1027, 4899, 9898, etc.). That eliminates most of the entries. The remainder can be sorted and scanned (visually) to get an idea of what’s been hitting the firewall.

While that may seem reassuring, the logs only tell me what is being blocked, not what is getting in. So, yes, you should worry. I do.

    Thanks for the response.

Actually, I wanted to use Workgroup Manager (why did I call it WGS?) for user management. Maybe it’s not reliable enough. It doesn’t seem to be able to change owners and permissions on a copied folder, either. Nor does the Finder via Get Info. I guess I’ll have to study up on the ch* commands in my new O’Reilly Panther book for that. I waited for Panther Server thinking it would make things a lot easier. Bah!

    Excellent! Thanks for the pointers.

There was a question among the user comments about the script regarding restoration of the backed up OD files. Is it anything more complex than shutting down the services, then copying the backed up files to their original locations (provided in the script)?
