After almost a month of debate, our NOC has stated that it is not going to happen. I believe this to be more of a political issue than a technical one. And, they have also shown me that they largely misunderstand NetBoot, even after explaning it to them. I have also come to learn that a Mac team member from the group that manages our student labs has also been denied this request in the past, and that team manages a number of Macs ten-fold compared to my department. So, thank you for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

You might hate this suggestion, but unless you have a real, mission critical use for it, disable IPv6. The only way you effectively do this is to turn it off at the setup assistant immediately after a clean install, after the first restart. It’s something to do with the IPv6 name tables in 10.4… I was having a ton of problems getting a working OD Master setup until I finally turned off IPv6.

Side note: This info isn’t something I stumbled on to. It was passed to me from one of the guys I work with at my university, and he got it from an Apple engineer who was helping someone else here. Anyway… just wanted to suggest that, good luck.

If there’s no connection through the ethernet port but there is through Airport (en1 I assume), then absolutely. Unless you’ve disabled airport on the client it’s going to look for a connection on that port. You can change the priority of the airport card over other NIC’s or completely disable it, but if Airport’s the only one that has a valid network connection and you haven’t already disabled it, then it will in fact look for a connection.

I also think that connecting via a wireless connection is explicitly unsupported by Apple in their OD documentation. Good luck.
