    sorry, server log on ssh connect actually says 

    Aug 5 23:46:25 (hostname withheld) xinetd[404]: START: ssh pid=11291 from=(IP ADDRESS WITHHELD)
Aug 5 23:48:25 (hostname withheld) sshd[11291]: fatal: Timeout before authentication for (IP ADDRESS WITHHELD)

    Just wanted to let you know that I ran into this problem (on 10.3.5 Server) as well and fixed it in a different way…

    The dsAttrTypeStandard:NFSHomeDirectory attribute was present (just NFSHomeDirectory, actually), but contained a reference to my servers machine name:

    /Network/Servers/server.mydomain.com/Volumes/File Server RAID/Users/gabe

    I just set-up a local zone file for server.mydomain.com and AFP logins worked normally again.
