    I’m curious about this too.

I’ve been working for the past few months to transition all our graphics systems over to OS X, so that only our Avid editing bays are on OS 9. It has really gone pretty smoothly, with only a few minor hickups along the way. Our backup solution at the present time is only half-implemented because we’re not sure if we’re going to use a little DLT on the network somewhere, or get some massive storage solution (ahem – Xraid – ahem) and just mirror the volume to that.

Find a place for hundreds and hundreds of GBs of information isn’t easy.

Okay… I think I’ve got a solution in mind. Looking for some feedback…

    Here’s the plan:

I’m going to set up a computer with a 200GB RAID array in our machine room specifically for soundfx and music, creating a centralized iTunes library. Then I’m going to set up a little script that executes on the client computers when they log in. It will check to see if they have an iTunes library in the appropriate place. Then one of two things will happen:

    1. If they [b:9b0cda4154]don’t[/b:9b0cda4154] have the library I’m going to copy the iTunes library into the folder (probably about 2MB). Then, I’m going to set up a cron job to synchronize the libraries every few minutes using rsync.

    2. If they [b:9b0cda4154]do[/b:9b0cda4154] have the library in there I’m going to use rsync to sychronize the libraries w/ cron every few minutes.

How’s that sound? Is there anything else that iTunes needs to work in the way I want it too? Thanks for your feedback.

    Tomster,

I think I have a similar problem with my set up too. I’m sharing a few sharepoints under the Shared Items folder in the path:

    /Network/Servers/Xserve1/”Shared Items”/

Depending on the user that logs in, s/he should have access to different folders in the Shared Items. But, as it is now, the appropriate permissions are not being given. For example, I have a Producers folder that is set to autmount for users in the Producers group, and Support folder for members of the Support group. The owner of these sharepoints is root and the appropriate groups are given rw permission for the folders. But, when I log in as, say, a member of the Producers group, I don’t have access to the Producers folder (ie, it says there are 0 items in that folder). Strangely, I do have access to two other folders that I shouldn’t even have permission to view!

This feature is going to be very much appreciated by the people at work here once I get the bugs worked out.

I changed the export properties to ‘client’ and specified a few clients to test that out, but I still just had the 4kb aliases with no mounting of the filesystem. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but it’s probably more trouble than it’s worth when AFP makes it so easy.

And, perhaps there’s some syntax that I don’t know of to make adding clients to the list of NFS clients easier, but adding the entries manually is not going to be practical for our uses here.

So, in light of all that, I took your other suggestion and just mounted them via AFP. It’s working just fine now. Thanks!

For the changes to take effect on the client side you may need to restart. That has been my experience at least.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Joel…

I read your excellent article on setting up network logins, and I realized that I did not have guest access turned on. That’s so weird! Why do we have to do that? Is that setting just named badly? What is that doing when we set it to enable guest access?

Thanks for your input. I’ve pretty much got it going now thanks to your advice.

ps: I’m also setting up a shared Font volume mounted statically in /Network/Fonts via NFS. One question I had: If I configure a shared item to mount via NFS does the Xserve need to reboot to make that change take effect? I had one of the 240GB RAID arrays set to share via NFS and it didn’t show up until a reboot that I did while upgrading to 10.2.2. Is there a way to kill the NFS daemons and restart NFS without rebooting the system?

    Thanks again!
