ParticipantNothing like responding to your own post!
Ok, after a lot of digging around I came across this Microsoft support article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327259 which actually talks about Windows Server 2003, but the fix seemed to work:
To change the “Do not check for user ownership of Roaming Profile Folders” policy setting:
Start the Group Policy snap-in.
Browse to the following folder:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles
In the right pane, double-click Do not check for user Ownership of Roaming Profile Folders.
To turn on the policy, click Enabled. To turn off the policy, leave the policy undefined or click Disabled.
Click OK.My assumption is that WinXP was unable to determine the correct owner of the profile folder possibly because of ACLs. There also appeared to be an option to put into the smb.conf file under the [Profiles] share called ‘profile acls = yes’ but this didnt seem to have any effect for me, I guess because my profiles are not stored in the default Samba location so that setting didnt apply?
Either way, the Microsoft solution seems to have fixed the problem. Yay! 😀

ParticipantWell I am still experiencing this problem. Its always different packages that fail, I have tried recreating these packages anyway but it made no difference. If I remove those packages, other random ones have a problem, one time after a build there was no failures! Its totally random!
In my most recent build there was an issue with createUser.pkg (which I downloaded from here) it created the user, but it didn’t create the whole home directory structure, the only folder in the homedir was Desktop.
I am at a loss as to how to fix this. If I cant rely on InstaDMG outputting a reliable image then I will have to revert back to the old manual way of making images. Can any of the devs weigh-in and provide me with some suggestions. I’d also be interested to know if the other people in this thread managed to solve their similar issues.

Participant
Quote by: jdyck[p]I may try repacking a few of them, but to be honest I’m not at all confident that’s the problem for the following reasons:
1. It’s never the same package(s) that fail – so far it seems completely random.
2. Some of the failed packages are things like iMovie 06 that are fresh from Apple and have worked numerous times before.
3. All of the packages have worked in the past at least once, and
4. Most of my packages were built in PackageMaker 3.03 (I had tonnes of problems with 3.0 crashing on me)
[/p]
Yeah, this is exactly it. Packages that I had trouble with before (like the Citrix ICA client) installed fine when I performed the next build, but something else was missing instead. Like jdyck, overall every package has worked at least once, but just never all in the one build. I use JAMF Composer to create my packages. I never notice this problem when I do small builds of around 10 pkgs, my main build train has around 45 pkgs in it at the moment.

ParticipantThanks for your work on this one, GarageBand loops drive me crazy. I also install 4 Jam Packs and Soundtrack Loops but its just a matter of adding the extra locations to your script.
The one question I have is I am happy to run this as a on-boot launchd script, but because I have to reindex 6 different directories it takes a long time and the script continues running even after I login. Is there some way to configure a on-boot script so that the machine waits until the script is finished before displaying the loginwindow?
scr
ParticipantThanks, I fixed up those folders.
I ran a build again last night and its as you say, pkgs that failed last time installed fine this time, but a couple of others were missing. The logs say nothing helpful other than “The install was successful” but they dont appear in my final dmg. Sorry I cant be of more help. I’m not sure how to troubleshoot this one. Has anyone else noticed this?
scr
ParticipantI am experiencing this problem also, but I am not using InstaUp2Date.
I did an InstaDMG build last night and here are are the log excerpts from the simple log:

If you look at the simple log excerpt, the order is weird. InstaDMG installs 5, then 51, then 6. I have a total of 51 numbered folders in the CustomPKG folder in sequential order. Shouldnt 5 and 6 come before 10?

Participant
Quote by: thespider[p]
Hi scr,Did you get the “specified users” option working? I tried for a hour but didn’t get it.
[/p]
No, it assigns the permissions to the user but it doesn’t select the “only these users” option. Thats where I gave up. 🙂
scr
ParticipantOk, so apparently its all my fault.
Unplugging the Firewire cable from the back of the machine stopped the delay before the loginwindow! I dont know how or why, but I’m glad it has nothing to do with my build train.
Still working on the ‘specified users’ option in ARD though.
scr
ParticipantOk, it seems as though the blue screen only starts happening after I install the 10.5.5 combo update. I performed an erase and install using my Leopard 10.5 DVD and after restarting a few times there were no delays. I then modified my build train to remove the 10.5.5 combo updater and installed the resulting dmg onto my test machine (Aluminum iMac 20″) and everything was still ok (no delays during bootup). So I then proceed to install the 10.5.5 combo update and on the subsequent restart (and all other restarts thereafter) I get a long delay before the login window.
My next test is to try a previous combo update (10.5.3) and see if the problem persists.
Heres an excerpt from the system.log incase anyone finds it helpful:

Participant
Quote by: knowmad[p]its working as an install only script? ie it runs during build not boot? way cool, this I have to test.
[/p]
Yeah, as an install only script ARD access is enabled, it grants the privileges fine. The only part I cant get it to do is the ‘specified users’ option. No matter what I seem to set there it doesnt change the radio button selection on the ARD config screen from ‘All Users’ to ‘Only there users’. This becomes a problem for me as I only want our Admin account to have ARD access, not any other local accounts created on the machine.
As for the blue screen delay before the loginwindow, this happens even after I restart the computer. Im going to try an InstaDMG build without the 10.5.5 combo updater and see if it still happens. This kind of has me stalled at the moment, but seeing as no-one else has had the issue it must be something I am doing thats causing it. Perhaps i’ll try restoring the image to a second machine too, just to be sure.
Thanks for the replies.
scr
ParticipantThanks Patrick. I finally got around to testing it again and its all working great now. I think that target tag was the key.
