Just heard back. The reply? “Maybe you can use Likewise”. I’m done struggling.
EDIT: some testing reveals that this only happens with Lion. Maybe I can expect a fix from Apple.
I am having the exact same problem, except kerberos seems to intermittently fail as a result.
