Glad to know I am not alone. Have problem with “inherit permissions” not propagating in the shared folders on a new G5 Xserve/10.4.4. Have ACL turned off for the sharing volume. Troubleshoot with Apple Enterprise tested the availability of “Propagate Permissions” in the pull-down gear in the Sharing/Access tab for the test folder when toggling the ACL box in The General tab for the volume, restarting the server after toggling. The expected bgehavior is that “Propagate Permmissions” is greyed-out in the gear pull-down when ACL is on for the volume. We find that it is available regardless. This indicates to the Apple support guy that there is a problem in the OS. The solution? You guessed it: Reinstall the server.
I plan to do a file system check with Diskwarrior, then apply the latest combo updater.
If this does not work, I plan to learn all about ACLs and abandon the “inherit permissons” technigue that has worked for so many for so long.
Looks like Apple broke this bit when adding ACLs. I noticed an Apple article (Article ID: 301601) acknowledging a problem in 10.4, supposedly repaired in 10.4.2. Apparently NOT.
