ParticipantGood enough! I’ll post it here.
Thanks, Joel.
Best,

ParticipantChecking again today, it seems the
/usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn't match what we generated
error appears any time the admin user authenticates.
OD services are active, though the client really hasn’t used it for anything. I might just turn it off.
Checking /Library/Logs/PasswordService/ApplePasswordServer.Error.log doesn’t report much, though there is a
Mar 7 2006 15:10:15 Listener exception error: -1
error in there. Not sure if that indicates a problem, though…
If these errors continue, I’d like to do something to resolve whatever’s causing this problem. Is it likely there’s something wrong with the user account?
I appreciate any feedback you all might have.

ParticipantThere have been dictionary crack attempts against this server via ssh, but they haven’t caused problems before.
This error appears after changing the administrative user’s password, either via the Accounts tab in System Preferences or WGM. Immediately after doing so, the error pops into the logs.
Yesterday in the afternoon, I changed the administrator’s password, so perhaps that triggered the instability.
But why? (I know that’s a very vague question. Sorry.)

ParticipantI just visited a client with this issue.
The server became sluggish yesterday and appeared to lock up pretty solidly this afternoon. It wouldn’t respond to any keyboard input, and accessing via ssh failed. The only option was a reboot.
Once back up, the only sign of anything suspicious was a few system.log entries right before it became unresponsive:
/usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn’t match what we generated
Anybody have any ideas what this might mean?
Thanks,
Nate

ParticipantThis is all set after adding the search domain in resolv.conf and following the “DNS best practices” article from afp548.
Thanks.

ParticipantUpdate:
All the DNS issues seem to be resolved. Before, I couldn’t do reverse lookups on the server, but that’s all working now.
Attempts to connect to the smb shares are now met with “NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD” errors, even for freshly created users.
The server’s configured as an OD master, but I don’t have the ability to assign users OD passwords. My only options are crypt or shadow.
Password server looks like it’s finally running, but is it possible that smbd isn’t communicating with it to authenticate users?
Anybody, anybody?

ParticipantOh, and since the server’s set up as a standalone, I can’t give this user an open Directory password. He just has the standard crypt password. Could this be the problem? If so, why doesn’t the admin user have the same problem?

ParticipantYesterday I had the joy of finally being able to sit and watch the server restart three times while I was sitting in front of it. I was watching the Activity Monitor while it was happening and saw the inactive processes use up 2/3 of the system memory and as soon as there is no free space available I lose any control of the server and the restart is not far off. Is there a way to flush the inactive processes memory usage?

ParticipantNothing in the Panic logs. We do have a SCSI card installed that we use to use with our tape drive for back ups. But since we found Carbon Copy Cloner we no longer use it. Would you recommend removing it? And I will turnoff the Automatic Restart a see what we can see. Fresh ideas are exactly what i needed. I am very new to the server administration world so I really appreciate the help.

ParticipantThere is nothing in the Crashreporter. Other than Filemaker Pro not running when I get to work in the morning you wouldn’t even know it has restarted. Until you check the watchdog log to see that it restarted itself. My best guess since I have never really been witness to the restart is that some process hangs and watchdog sees this (I think this is the process that forces the restart) and restarts the server. Does this mean that the server does not see this as a crash so nothing gets logged? At one time I thought it was ARD since in the Activiity Monitor I found that it had hung a couple of times. But I turned that process off an it still restarts.
