GuestMy xserve has been locking up for some time now and I’m pretty sure its due to all my Windows users I have logging into it. Its a PDC for my 70+ windows users and a OD master for my Macs. It seems every couple of days it hangs and no one can login. I go to the server and its a sleep and I can’t wake it up (beach ball). I can’t login via SMB or AFP.
I think my password server is crashing and causing this, but I can’t be for sure. What can I do to trouble shoot this, the server is setup right. Could I be doing to much on it? below is my syslog in hopes that one of you can read this and help me. Thanks

GuestThanks for the suggestions, but that didn’t do the trick. I would say only about 30-40 are logged in at once. Could it be I’m pushing it to hard? I’m really out of ideas. The thing locks up out of no where every 1-4 days, Its very random.
I can’t even ssh into the thing just a spinning beach ball when I got to wake it up.
I have another server I’m using for Mac users is there a way I can take some of the windows burden of the one? You can only have one PDC so I’m not sure how I would do that.
Thanks
September 21, 2004 at 3:29 pm #359248Anonymous
GuestYes OD master and PDC.. its auth server for Windows users and AFP users. Then I have some other servers that bind to that one. Stores some home directories as well.
September 21, 2004 at 3:32 pm #359249Anonymous
GuestOh sorry, I missunderstood. The other system replica. I have others that are connected to the master as well.
September 21, 2004 at 6:34 pm #359255Anonymous
GuestWell I haven’t done that yet seeing how if its off no one can use the PC’s. I can’t test it for a couple days because they need to use them. My next step is to start moving home directories off and onto the replica. But something tells me thats not going to work either.
Its random and locks up between 1-5 days.
September 21, 2004 at 7:56 pm #359258Anonymous
GuestHow can I do this when i can’t even ssh into the machine? The only thing I can do is ping it.

GuestI also have the same problem as above, but i am only using xserve for mail only. No AD or OD. Any suggestions on how I can do to help? Thanks in advance…

GuestI’m having this issue as well. Using the Xserve as an OD Master, no PDC or Windows clients. Just AFP service and OD.
Logs consistently show the following when it locks up –
Mar 2 10:08:21 dthosx /usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn’t match what we generated
March 7, 2006 at 7:55 pm #365582foilpan
ParticipantI just visited a client with this issue.
The server became sluggish yesterday and appeared to lock up pretty solidly this afternoon. It wouldn’t respond to any keyboard input, and accessing via ssh failed. The only option was a reboot.
Once back up, the only sign of anything suspicious was a few system.log entries right before it became unresponsive:
/usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn’t match what we generated
Anybody have any ideas what this might mean?
Thanks,
Nate
March 7, 2006 at 9:13 pm #365587foilpan
ParticipantThere have been dictionary crack attempts against this server via ssh, but they haven’t caused problems before.
This error appears after changing the administrative user’s password, either via the Accounts tab in System Preferences or WGM. Immediately after doing so, the error pops into the logs.
Yesterday in the afternoon, I changed the administrator’s password, so perhaps that triggered the instability.
But why? (I know that’s a very vague question. Sorry.)

ParticipantChecking again today, it seems the
/usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn't match what we generated
error appears any time the admin user authenticates.
OD services are active, though the client really hasn’t used it for anything. I might just turn it off.
Checking /Library/Logs/PasswordService/ApplePasswordServer.Error.log doesn’t report much, though there is a
Mar 7 2006 15:10:15 Listener exception error: -1
error in there. Not sure if that indicates a problem, though…
If these errors continue, I’d like to do something to resolve whatever’s causing this problem. Is it likely there’s something wrong with the user account?
I appreciate any feedback you all might have.

GuestWe are having the same issue. These are great ideas. But what is the solution? This also happened for me after changing my admin password. Every 1-5 days just like the above post indicates. Any solutions?
May 3, 2006 at 7:01 pm #366105Anonymous
GuestI did a Google search on the text of the error message you are discussing, "client response doesn’t match what we generated", and found this discussion thread.
I know in my case that this issue is related to two users who are using Microsoft Outlook to access the IMAP email server running on our Apple XServe. The funny thing is that they can send email through the same server using username and password without any problems. ?? Also, other email clients such as Mozilla Thunderbird have no issues or problems accessing the email accounts on this server. Likely I will have to upgrade MS Office in order to get these users working as Thunderbird or web access doesn’t appeal to them.
It seems to be this is related to how MAC OSX is resolving public/private keys and what it comes up with doesn’t match the password that comes across from the client machine, or something along those lines. Just guessing. Outlook is generating a 40-bit key and the Xserve is generating a 128-bit key or something along those lines.
Thankfully I don’t have the other problems mentioned here but maybe this will provide some additional ideas.

My xserve has been locking up for some time now and I’m pretty sure its due to all my Windows users I have logging into it.
Thanks
