ParticipantI can upload a “Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD.dmg” file to you if you need one. This is how bad I want to get this problem resolved.

ParticipantThank you so much Nate for taking your time out to help me.

Participantdead2sin,
yes. I am building a 10.5.8 image using a 10.5.8 machine.
I am going to try building a 10.6.4 image with a 10.6.4 machine and see if the mosen patch and the Office 2008 updates work.
Is there any solution for 10.5.8 and Office 2008 updates? How do I get around this problem (ex: chroot jails)?

Participant
Quote by: dead2sin[p]
Quote by: Brigandy[p]I am running Instaup2date r353 from a Mac Pro (OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8) and am trying to create a 10.5.8 image.
I am able to install “Office 2008 for Mac v12.0.0 (AKA: Office Installer.mkpg) with no problems.
Note: I am using a volume license version of “Office 2008 for Mac v12.0.0”.
The problem is:
I am unable to install “Office 2008 for Mac” updates. When I try to install updates I receive the following error in my debug log:
” The install failed (The following install step failed: run preflight script for Quit Microsoft Applications. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)”
I have successfully used Mosen’s patch (to patch my “Office 2008 for Mac” updates), but I still receive the error (above).
Note:The Mosen patch can be found at the following location: https://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=45&showtopic=26882
What am I doing wrong?
PS:
I have also tried the latest volume license version of “Office 2008 for Mac v12.2.x”. Updates just do not work. I keep getting the error outlined in bold (above).[/p]
Try using this for the Office updates:

I use that on all mine before putting them in InstaDMG and they work great.

Nate:
That is what i’m using. I’m using the patch in the Office 2008 tutorial link (above). I guess I shouldn’t of referred to Mosen. I should of called it the dead2sin patch. This patch that you referred me to does not work. I’ve tried using the following updates: 12.1.0 12.2.0, etc…all the way up to 12.2.6. The patch does patch the update (I have verified this) but the end result is the following error occurs when it goes to install ANY Office 2008 update:
” The install failed (The following install step failed: run preflight script for Quit Microsoft Applications. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.)”

Participant
Quote by: Allister[p]Hey Brigandy,
Via a message to the MacEnterprise mailing list back in May of this year, Mr. Greg Neagle posted this one-liner:
/usr/bin/hdiutil create -srcfolder /path/to/pkg /path/to/whereyouwanttoputthe.dmg
A pkg is essentially a folder, so in DiskUtility it’s File->New->DiskImageFromFolder… and then you can navigate straight to the package/mpkg. Or, as I was suggesting, create a new folder in Finder, put the mpkg and an installerChoices.xml file for Office(you’d make it in the same method as for the BaseOS), and point DiskUtility to that new folder.Allister[/p]
Allister,
Placing the “Office Install.mpkg” into a dmg file resolved this issue. Thanks a bunch!
Now why does the “Office Install.mpkg” have to be placed into a dmg?
The InstaUp2Date instructions say that you can place a pkg, mpkg or a dmg in the “InstaUp2DatePackages” directory, but it looks like this is not true, since a Microsoft Office 2008 mpkg file will not work. What’s the deal?

Participant
Quote by: Allister[p]Hey Brigandy,
Three other things(that may just be voodoo from attempts at tweaking pkgs to play nicer with instaUp2Date) are:
-I’d try removing the space in the filename
-I’d bundle the mpkg back up in a DMG(don’t use the ISO) with DiskUtility or hdiutil and move it to the caches folder
-when you bundle it back up, you may want to make a folder for the mpkg and include an installerChoices.xml file for it, especially if you don’t want out of date apps like Messenger or language translations.I’ve had peculiarities with custom pkgs and instaup2date in 10.5.8, but not(instadmg-friendly elsewhere) commercial software.
Thank you for letting us know this is actually a volume license, and you are building 10.5.8 on 10.5.8, it’s very helpful when you’re asking for assistance to have that clarification. In your original post, would you mind modifying the all-caps back to regular, please? We’re pretty observant lately. Also, is this a rather recent version of instaDMG(339, as you made mention to previously)?
Let us know how it goes, please!
Allister
[/p]
Allister,
Can you give me the steps (via CLI or Disk Utility) on how to bundle the mpkg to a DMG file? Thanks.

Participant
Quote by: larkost[p]It is there because the last time I did a from-scratch install of 10.5 that is the list and order of things I had to install. If you care to do a from-scratch install and record that it is not necessary, then please do and tell me. And we pretty much bypass all of the safeguards that SoftwareUpdate puts in place, so just because it is happy with it does not prove that it is not needed.[/p]
Well what’s it going to be larkost?
Why does Software Update want to update a system to “Security Update 2010-004” before updating it to “Security Update 2010-005”? Aren’t these updates cumulative? Aren’t these updates suppose to supersede the previous update? Why does Apple have us running around in circles?
Note:
If I manually download the “Security Update 2010-005” from Apple’s website and install it, I find that I can skip the “Security Update 2010-004” and not install it.So what’s the deal here?
Why does “Software Update” want me to download a previous security update before it installs the latest one?
