My boss has given in and agreed to get an Xserve to support our macs, but I’m not sure what I need spec wise.
I’ve tinkered about on a headless mini running Tiger Server, and have been using Open Directory on my lonesome for a while with no significant hitches (apart for some mild head scratching on occasion).
These are the rough specs being banded around the office (bare minimum)
1 x Intel Xserve with 2.8GHz Quad-Core I
2GB of 800MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM memory,
3x73GB SAS HDs
Mac OSX Server Leopard (v10.5) unlimited client licence
Ideally we would have had a 16TB Raid via Fibre but the PC brigade want a Dell and won the day) so basically we need a xserve to manage the macs on our network.
I want to use it for Open Directory(Network Home Dirs for around 20 users)/Software update/Netinstall (maybe netboot too, for rare occasions) and generally take some weight off the Dell Raid by keeping our mac related shares on the Xserve.
My first instinct is to drop the SAS drives and get some(3) 1TB 7200s. We need space rather than speed. I also hear rumors that Xserves eat memory for breakfast, so I’m trying to push for atleast 4GB Mem.
I guess in short, what do you guys think would be suitable for my requirements. Unfortunatley its a limited budget now thanks to dell 😉
Any information appreciated.
