    Greets everybody,

If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll see I am slowly rebuilding a network that currently comprises of a golden triangle configuration.

1 x AD as the primary network authenticator (Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, NTP)
1 x Mac Pro running 10.5.8 as ODMaster (pushing out work group prefs) AND HOSTING USER HOME FOLDERS
1 x Mac Pro running 10.5.8, running misc services like Software Updates and workstation deployment images.

Everything is running swimmingly so far, I have been able to get both windows and mac clients logging on and accessing their home folders correctly (I restored their work with rsync and rebuilt their home directory permissions with passengers batch permission mod feature). Both windows and MAC clients now save and load their work with no problems.

EXCEPT….. for a application that my end users have brought to my attention, its a windows application called Photostory 3. (www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx). When executing the application and saving a project file to the user home folder (hosted on ODMaster) everything is a okay.

But when opening the saved project file in Photostory 3 the application states that the file is corrupted and unable to be loaded. During my debug process I took the “corrupted” (suspected) file and copied it to a usb stick, and local NTFS volume (of the windows client) and the same file opened in Photostory 3 no problems from both the USB stick and local volume, I copy the file back to the network volume and the same error message appears. The problem is with accessing / loading the file when it is stored on the network volume (home folder hosted on the ODMaster). I can read the file with notepad to see if its accessible (its a binary file) so I think its not a permissions problem.

I asked around several other sites, that where using Photostory on network volumes (home directories stored on windows servers) and they stated they had no problems with loading their end users Photostory project files.

So I am asking somebody, anybody if they have seen this problem with Photostory or any other application being unable to load its data files from network volumes that are hosted on Macintosh OSX 10.5.8 Servers via their windows xp sp3 clients.

Is it something to do with file locking, file accessing, do I need to make command line modifications to the SMB service / config files on ODMaster to make the system more compatible with certain multimedia applications that need to lock files?

Do you guys need more info to help with a diagnosis / solution.

    Regards

    sheridan

I don’t know about Photostory, but do you have the same problem if you host the home folder via SMB rather than AFP (you’ll need to change the AD Plug-in settings with Directory Utility).

Thanks for the reply arekdreyer, but the application photostory is a windows only application and thus only runs under windows xp not the Macintosh platform.

I hope I didn’t make that ambiguous in my previous post and thus causing readers to get their wires crossed.
