I seem to be having some major problems with users and home folders. As an indicative experiment, I have just created a new user in WM.

Name: Peter Wimsey (short name peter)
    uid: 1030
    primary gid: 20 (staff)
Home: well, here is the problem. I see three entries in the list:

    (None) [Home:]
    /Users [Home: /Users/peter]
    afp://10.10.10.2/Users [Home: afp://10.10.10.2/Users/peter
    /Network/Servers/morse.local/Users/peter]

The string in square brackets above is what I see when I highlight each of these entries.

If I highlight either of the non-empty entries above and click on “Create Home Now” then it says “Home directory creation will be attempted on save.” But when I have clicked the Save button and gone to the file system, there is no “peter” folder.

OK, I think, perhaps it is only created in reality when I log in as peter from a workstation. Indeed, when I log in I see a local home folder called /Users/peter. But there is no home folder on the server. Why not? The other users I created earlier have server-side folders?

This may be tied up with another problem I have been having recently, whereby I can’t write to folders on the server even though I have full control according to Workgroup Manager, both personally and as a member of a variety of groups.

    Ian.
