Did a search on the site and forums for ‘xserve intel’ and got the same results I’ve been hearing elsewhere: " "

Does anyone have an inkling as to where the xserve is going when the transition to Intel comes along? It seems like the ‘altivec + cluster’ was a neat thing for a while and got some publicity, but that will be missing. Does Apple still have an interest in its server?

Personally, we’re using one to provide a web interface front end to some IT functions. I’m looking at getting an Xsan to provide back storage for logs & some other large archive files.

Intel has several new chips for servers on its product roadmap (Woodcrest, Clovertown). Apple will want to use one of these chips as they come out. Remember they still have 10 months before the transition is complete.

What will be really interesting is whether Apple will expand beyond a 1U server into 2U, 4U or blade servers. In order to compete with Dell, HP, and IBM they are going to have to diversify their server form factors. Personally, a ClovertownX2 2U server with hardware RAID is just what I would like to see myself.
