What’s the best practice to package iLife 09? I’ve looked around for a nifty installer like the one for instaDMG – but I’m not finding anything (may be because I’m not using the right terminology?).

I’ve not baked in iLife 09 to my images for a while now, so I have not had a chance to try it, but they have a catalog file for the iLife 09 Updates and I believe you can use the iLife 09 DMG and InstaDMG will install it straight away.

    The catalogs:

I believe it will mount a .dmg of the iLife 09 DVD, then install the .mpkg as usual. Give it a shot and see how it works.

I wasn’t really looking to build it into the main image, I was looking to patch to the latest and greatest then make a deployable image that I could add to our deployment ‘build’.

Instadmg seemed to do a good job for making the touchless but updated image for the OS and I saw some stuff about iLife – wasn’t sure if I could use that to do kind of the same thing for just iLife..

Ah, I am not sure about that. I’ve repackaged iLife 09 using Composer before (With updates) and it seemed to work alright.

    Hey there,

Just drop the mpkg in a folder, or if you’re using instaUp2Date, bundle in a read-only compressed disk image with an installerChoices.xml file of your own making. It’s really that easy. iWork requires an extra tweak or two, but iLife really is that easy. If someone had a guide on how to safely slice out just each apps mpkg individually, I’d love to hear it. Mr. Neagle’s invaluable managingosx.wordpress.com has (among its numerous great ideas) how to customize firefox, take parts of the Final Cut suite and at least make them slightly more modular to install, but iLife is pretty cut-and-dry.

Ask more questions! It took me forever to realize I could do this with Office 08 as well.

I actually just ended up packaging with casper. Now when I deploy it and run off our local (hidden) admin account – all the apps except iPhoto work – which gives an error about no permissions. I assume it’s because of the admin account is hidden?

I just got iLife 09 working with InstaDMG straight out of the box today. The only side effect was that it made an iMovie Previous folder which was easily deleted with a payload less package.
