So, Apple have made it clear that NetInfo will eventually go away and Flat Files have been around for ever.
Is there any other domain that can be used for local (non-shared) configuration?

Is it safe to say that flat-files will always be supported or is this a bad investment?

    OK,

I think I have figured out that in order to futureproof, I should use the Open Directory dscl utility instead of the NetInfo-only tools (nicl, niload, nidump) so that I won’t have to completely re-write scripts when Apple pull the plug on NetInfo.
