I reinstalled Panther Server and am in Server Assistant. It asks for a Host Name. Reading c. Carson’s Client Management with Mac OS X Server document he recommends entering a fully qualified domain name. I want this server to be an Open Directory Server where all user folders will be on the Server. I’m not sure what to enter here. Can I just make-up a name? From what I understand I’ll need to have DNS running but I only want it to be used locally on my LAN- I don’t have a registered domain. So what do I use here?

You can go ahead and make up a FQDN as long as you are behind NAT (the server doesn’t have a public IP address). The hostname should be entered as “bigserver.mydomain.com” for things to work correctly.
