    hello,

we have a xserve with mac os x 10.3.8 server and a very strange problem:

windows xp users (with sp1 or sp2) connect to our server with smb. after 15 minutes of using a share, the users get an “access denied” error message in the open/save dialog window, if they try to e.g. open a word-file directly from microsoft word or to attach an attachment to an email directly from outlook.

strange is, that they can sometimes use a sharepoint still in windows explorer. after they make a reboot, they can use the sharepoint again.

I found several posts in apples discussion forum, that discuss similar problems, but unfortunately nobody found a solution until now.

one tip was to activate “guest access”, with this setting my colleagues are able to use a sharepoint for 30 minutes, but after that same problems again.

to make it even more strange:
we have this problem with users, which use notebooks with windows xp since last week – before that they had imacs with mac os 9.

we have also 10 windows-users, which have their windows 2000 and windows xp workstations for several month. interestingly, only one user have also this problem since 4 weeks, the other 9 user never had this problem!

i feel clueless, any suggestions from you would be great!

    thanks!

    best regards,

    ferdinand

Are you only using the Xserve for authentication, or are you using an Active Directory in the background?

One trick I found with my AD was to specify a winbindseparator in the smb.conf file. I’ve also found that my Windows clients had more reliable, faster connections over SMB to my Xserve if they mapped the shares as network drives.
