Greetings! We have been using network home directories in our labs for some time now. The home directory server is on a separate box and users are able to see their correct quota disk space, etc when they look at their home directory after login.
However when the computer logs in if the user is over quota, it seems to be trying to write different data back to the home directory. Since there is no space, it just keeps trying and soon bogs down our home directory server. Does anyone have any ideas how I can prevent login if over quota or prevent my os x clients from writing data back. I have used NHR to redirect cache files in the past, but have ran into problems using that with the new Office 2008. I also tried using Leopard built-in redirector and had similar problems with office.

Thanks for any ideas!

You can use edquota and set a soft and hard quota and the soft quota will allow the user to go over the limit to the soft amount but warn them to clear some things off as they are running out of space. As far as I can tell this can only be done from the command line.

Thanks for the info about edquota. Just out of curiosity, would be setting this on the server or would I be doing some type of check with it at user login?

thanks for any more info.
