If you’re planning to upgrade your Client to Server, or an older version of Server to Jaguar, you may run into a bug we’ve found here chez AFP548.com: once your initial Setup Assistant is done, it launches Open Directory Assistant. Unfortunately, that Assistant wants you to authenticate as an Admin, and it seems to select your machines IP address most of the time. For reasons as yet unknown, even if you have proper forward and reverse DNS, you can’t actually authenticate.
You also can’t quit out of the Assistants!
The solution we hit upon here is: if you have access to another machine with SSH capabilities, SSH into your new Server and either issue [b:793e5685be]sudo shutdown -r now[/b:793e5685be] or find and kill the two Assistant processes. That will bring you to a login screen, where you can login and use the Directory Access application in /Applications/Utilities to complete configuration.
