I wanted to confirm that the iLife Support 9.0.4 update is definitely needed.

I just created a new image today and excluded that from the vanilla catalog. But as soon as OS X booted to desktop, Software Update ran and asked to install the iLife Support 9.0.4 update.

So, if possible, please don’t remove it from the 10.6 vanilla catalog:

Well I just checked this on a fresh image without the 9.0.4 update and I am not getting asked for it. Then I checked on the local software update server and it is enabled.

The description of it says:
Provides system software resources that are shared by iLife and other applications. This update improves overall stability for the Media Browser and iPhoto slideshows. It also provides compatibility between Aperture 3 and the Media Browser.

The update is recommended for all users of iLife ’09, iWork ’09, and Aperture.
So I would say this should go in the iLife09_Updates.catalog ¿?

I believe a few months ago there was an issue people were having with the order of the iLife Support update. And it wouldn’t install when used in the iLife catalog. Of course I don’t know if that’s still the case, but that was the experience with it a few months ago. I think so long as people installed the iLife Support update before iLife was installed and the other iLife updates, everything would work fine (at least that has been the case for me).

Just to put this to rest(I’m embarrassed I misspoke earlier about it not being necessary) – it is necessary according to the patch application method that is most heavily QA’d by apple R&D – manually running swupdate, I test for every catalogs contents by installing 10.6.3 and manually installing all patches in order. I then make the catalog use the publicly available patches in the order installed(which I verify by parsing system.log). Finally I build an image, restore it, and run swupdate once booted to verify my work. Suggestions are, as always, welcome.

Apologies for the confusion.

Turns out that the iPhoto 9.2.0 update requires 9.1.0 to be updated, so I have included this line

Hey nbalonso,

New catalogs are in svn as of this past Saturday, thanks for posting yours to compare against and following up. FYI, the method I’m using to derive what updates are needed, and in what order, is:

1. Restore the BaseOScache file per build(10.5.6, 10.6.3, 10.7.0 and newest Lion from the MacAppStore)
2. Boot with no packages added/workflows applied(i.e., don’t use deploystudio, just asr at the command line) and run the gui swupdate manually
3. grep the install.log for the order in which the packages are applied(only 10.5 had a SoftwareUpdate log, but ‘installed’ is a good keyword to cut through the fluff)
4. rinse and repeat until gui swupdate returns no packages

Then, when compiling those in order, only two other things of note:
a. remove any superfluous(hardware/accessory-specific, EFI/firmware/thunderbolt) updates and
b. check iLife updates with the same gui manner on the most popular version of the OS(still Snow Leo as of this writing)

Sound about right? Allister

Well that would explain why the order on mine doesn’t match the one in the svn. Your method sounds very reasonable ➡ so I’ll do that from now on

Newbie question here. What’s the command to pull down the latest catalog updates?

I recently started using InstaDMG and was able to make a base image from it months back. Haven’t touched it since but all the files that were generated are still sitting on my desktop. I assume there’s a simple command to run that will only pull down the latest catalog files and updates so that I can make an updated image?

Hey db,
When cd’d to that directory(if you pulled it down over svn the first time) you can run:
svn update
Optionally, I’ve been uploading a zip to the downloads section. Thanks, Allister
