Troubles Binding 10.4 to AD domain

I think my problem is AD Server side but I’m not sure.

So we have a test AD domain dev.domain.com and I’m trying to bind a 10.4 server to it. When I try to bind to dev.domain.com it comes back with invalid domain. But when I try to bind to domain.com it comes back with Invalid Username and Password. The AD account being used to bind is a domain admin account for the dev.domain.com domain. Why would it come back immediately as invalid domain? Is this a DNS issue? On windows machines we can bind with the same account and all we use for the domain name is “dev”. Does the user account need higher privileges to bind a 10.4 machine?

Any hints would be appreciated.
