I’d like to set up a share as a Time Machine destination that is usable for all members of the staff group on my network, such that nobody can view the contents of another user’s backup. Ideally, I’d prefer that it not be mountable in the Finder.

It says in the File Services Admin guide that these shares can be designated within Server Admin, but also that, in the Standard and Workgroup modes, the group will be changed to com.apple.access_backup.

This group doesn’t currently exist, locally or within the OD network domain, on our box which was upgraded from Tiger Server. I don’t have a spare machine to set up as a Standard config for the purpose of analyzing the automated handling of this service. I also cannot find mention of what the GID for this group should be.

Might somebody be able to share some insight into how I should go about setting this up?

    Thanks 🙂

Heh. I’m an idiot. This service works very nicely for OD users with pretty much no configuration required. The sparsebundles and permissions are perfect. I was worrying without having been in the office on the local subnet to try it out. Beautiful.

Can anyone confirm if they got this working with a server in Advanced configuration? The group com.apple.access_backup does not seem to exist.

    thanks,
