We have a corporate server setup with BMC Patrol as our monitoring system. This system has a logparser agent that can log on to our mac servers (via ssh) and read a log file that we create using a script.

We have not yet started the process of creating the script for monitoring. We would like to monitor a few services (FileWave, OD master/replica and perhaps SUS(Software Update Server)). And of course diskspace, CPU load and hardware status (heat, fans, powersupplies etc)

I imagine using bash tools for monitoring the services, that they are up and working. The same for disk space and hardware status.

    Now to the question.

Have anybody done something similar? What are your experiences.

I will continue to contribute the status in this thread but I would like your input.

    Thanks
    /Håkan

Does file wave not have an inventory system that can do a lot of this native?

Yes filewave has a inventory system (Asset Trustee) that we use but we need to connect to the existing monitoring organization that the other teams use.

Have any of you used the ipmitool sensor command on your servers?

    ipmitool sensor

Lists all available devices that is being monitored?

I am not sure what you mean by monitor services as Server Admin will allow you to connect to any server and monitor the services running. Could you give some more specific examples of what you want to accomplish?

    Thanks

Yes, more specific. We will put our servers in a segmented secure network setup where all administration will be made via a portal that only supports windows executables (surprise surprise). This prevents us from using server monitor in the portal aswell as using our client-computers to monitor the servers as our client machines will not be on the same secure segment of the network. And as we already have a monitoring organization here at the HQ our thinking is that we (the mac team) would like to use the same monitoring service as all other infrastructure services use. The monitoring team is windows and *NIX based but their tools (BMC Patrol) does not have a mac agent. So we are going to try to make a script that collects data on our servers about our services and hardware and put this in a log file that the monitoring system (Patrol) can access via some logparser agent over ssh.

    Hopefully this makes more sense?

    Thanks for your time!

Well, if you are going to script it out, is it going to run over ssh or telnet to the Windows client? I am not sure if I can be that much of help as I have little experience doing that. I can do some basic scripting in bash though if you post something I could help.
