I have always had this question in the back of mind (although I have never had any issues with it):

OSX Server requires DNS to operate correctly
OSX Server requires Open Directory to operate correctly

So, in a system where you have an OSX Server that functions as a DNS server (and is also connected to a different Open Directory server), and another OSX Server that is the Open Directory Master, what is the correct power up sequence?

    Option A:
    1. Power up the DNS Server first (it will not find the Open Directory server)
    2. Power up the Directory Server (it will find DNS, so that is good)
? – Will the DNS server function correctly by later finding the Open Directory Server, automagically fixing itself?

    Option B:
    1. Power up the Directory Server first (but it will not find the DNS server, so it is not happy)
    2. Power up DNS server
? – will the directory server fix itself and after the DNS server is running?

What about on a single-server installation – in a situation where the DNS server and the directory server are one in the same (box), and neither has been configured yet…

After initial setup assistant configuration, there will not be a properly configured DNS server running on first boot…

So do you just configure DNS after first boot and reboot?
or do you set it up stand alone first, then configure DNS after first boot and reboot, then change to Directory Master?
or does this stuff just work itself out?
